Dearest readers, the summer swathe of August 1999 was an absolute whirlwind of dance, darling! From the exquisite arabesques of the Paris Opera Ballet to the intoxicating rhythm of flamenco in Seville, I simply couldn't resist sharing the extraordinary ballet spectacles I was lucky enough to experience. Here are the highlights, just for you.

Paris Opera Ballet: A Symphony in Motion

There's just something magical about stepping into the Palais Garnier. The opulence, the anticipation, and that heavenly sense of being in the belly of a magnificent artistic beast. And what a beast it is, darlings! The Paris Opera Ballet, under the direction of the brilliant Brigitte Lefèvre, unveiled a production of “La Bayadère,” a feast for the senses. The exquisite choreography by Marius Petipa, infused with a potent cocktail of drama, passion, and tragedy, was truly mesmerizing. It was an ethereal journey from the sumptuous palaces of India to the hauntingly beautiful temple of the Shades. My dear friends, let me tell you, the corps de ballet dancers, so precise, so synchronized, are nothing short of astonishing! Their flowing lines and effortless elegance sent shivers down my spine. As for the principal dancers, the delicate, airy presence of Sylvie Guillem as Nikiya and the dynamic, fiery power of Nicolas Le Riche as Solor were, as they always are, nothing short of spectacular. I do adore watching a couple that dances as one.

A Spanish Fever in Seville

Next, I was whisked away to the sun-drenched streets of Seville. Flamenco, the heart and soul of Spain, pulsed through every cobblestone. And what better way to soak it up than at the famed Teatro Maestranza? The fiery, rhythmic steps, the cascading swirls of flamenco dresses, and the electrifying intensity of the dancers, oh darlings! I simply couldn't help but tap my feet in time. From the heart-wrenching passion of “El Amor Brujo” to the flamboyant energy of a pure flamenco performance, I was completely immersed in the pulsating soul of this timeless art form. The emotional depths and the unbridled energy are intoxicating.

Tokyo's Rising Stars

After the heady passion of Spain, I travelled east, to Tokyo, for a taste of fresh, innovative ballet. The Shibuya Bunka Kaikan theatre hosted an exhilarating performance by the Tokyo Ballet Company, a group of incredibly talented young dancers brimming with talent and originality. Their production of “The Rite of Spring” was electrifying! The powerful, modern choreography of Mats Ek brought out the savage and primordial forces of Stravinsky's masterpiece in a truly raw and primal way. It was almost uncomfortable to watch, with the primal energy thrumming beneath the stage, and a raw emotional intensity emanating from the dancers themselves. It left me feeling strangely shaken and excited. A Glimpse of the Future in Edinburgh

My travels concluded with a jaunt to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. This eclectic event truly reflects the vibrancy of dance in its ever-evolving forms. Among the plethora of productions, one stood out: “Dreamweavers” by the London Contemporary Dance Theatre. It was a poignant, contemporary exploration of dreams, love, and the delicate fragility of human existence. The dancers moved with astonishing fluidity and grace, their bodies weaving together a narrative both intricate and heart-rending. One moment I found myself laughing at a beautifully comedic scene, and the next, moved to tears by the poignancy of their movement vocabulary. Their breathtaking energy and raw talent were palpable.

My dear readers, each and every one of these productions reminded me why I love this art form so deeply. It has the power to transcend language and cultural boundaries, connecting us all through its universality. It is an experience for the soul, and a testament to the human capacity for artistry. Enjoy!

**More Than Meets the Eye**

You may know the beautiful costumes that we wear, the artistry of a grand plié, or a beautiful sequence of fouetté, but have you ever considered the artistry and skill that goes into building the ballet scenery? There’s a whole world of artisans behind each magnificent set that brings those beautiful worlds to life.

  • The Stagehands: The Unsung Heroes

Every stage production needs the hardworking, nimble hands of stagehands. They're like the fairies that sprinkle magical dust before every curtain call! They’re the quiet and efficient movers of furniture, props, backdrops, and yes, even us! The entire scene transitions into its next incarnation through the magic they make. They move seamlessly like shadows so we, the dancers, are free to move in front of them! From the ballet rehearsals through opening night, and then again night after night, these dedicated artists make the magic possible.

  • Behind the Backdrop: The Scenery Makers

Behind the stunning world that comes to life, there is a group of artisans who create a world that transports you to another place and time. From elaborate sets to delicate backdrops, their craftsmanship allows you to breathe in another place. The world of “La Bayadère” that I mentioned earlier in India, it is breathtaking to stand on stage and take it in. This magical land comes alive through these gifted set makers.

  • Lighting Up the Stage

Speaking of “bringing things to life,” I must pay tribute to the illuminating talents of the lighting crew. Have you ever noticed the delicate dance of light and shadow that accentuates our every move? From soft, romantic washes of colour to dramatically focused beams of light that draw attention to a single dancer, they craft the very atmosphere and mood of the ballet.

  • The Unseen World of Ballet Costuming

What ballet production would be complete without the artistry of our ballet costumes, those wondrous, elegant garments that both empower us, but at times, also hinder our movements as we perform in front of an audience! From the romantic tutus and soft fabrics for classical ballets, to the innovative, and sometimes radical costumes, the wardrobe team works magic in both creating and maintaining these treasured pieces that bring the dancer and character into their full expression on the stage.

The Dance World's Secrets and a Touch of Mystery

And now, darlings, a few delightful tidbits, a whisper of things just between us. It would be utterly gauche to mention a production without bringing in a few details. Here are some morsels you may find entertaining…

  • Did you know the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow once had a cat who had a regular place in the stage hand’s quarters! This cat became the darling of the dancers who took turns caring for it. The little fellow had quite the view from backstage! I would not have minded some feline company back when I was dancing.
  • Many believe that the best and brightest ballet dancers are drawn to the famed Parisian ballet. While true for many years, I heard a whisper recently that several British, Canadian, and even some American dancers are turning their eyes away from France. This change is bringing a unique look to the Russian Ballet and exciting new things in other corners of the globe!
  • Ballet and art are certainly intertwined, yet this world of dancers isn’t one known for lavish displays of fashion, although, a dance party can certainly get one to loosen up. Some ballet directors actually take inspiration from contemporary fashion to design the ballet. The beautiful fashions seen today have crept onto the ballet stage and influenced many directors and choreographers.

That, darlings, is the beauty of the dance world! It’s ever evolving and always captivating!
