A Choreographer's Diary: May 2001
Oh darling, the world of dance is simply sizzling this month! The spring air has got everyone in a frenzy, and the ballet scene is ablaze with innovation and sheer brilliance. Let me share with you the highlights from my globetrotting April.
London Calling: Where Dreams Take Flight
Darling, London never disappoints. This month saw a magnificent revival of "Swan Lake" at the Royal Opera House. The legendary Darcey Bussell was simply radiant as the Swan Queen, her movements fluid and ethereal. I was mesmerised by her vulnerability, a subtle pathos that danced around the stage like a whisper. The corps de ballet, with their perfectly synchronised movements, truly captured the haunting beauty of Tchaikovsky's score. There is simply nothing like the majesty of a traditional ballet at Covent Garden - a timeless masterpiece, executed to perfection. It was a pure pleasure to be in the audience for such an iconic piece.
A Parisian Passion: A Whirlwind of Colour
Paris is, of course, the undisputed queen of the avant-garde. This month, the Opéra de Paris premiered a new work by Angelin Preljocaj, titled "La Stravaganza." This was a theatrical masterpiece, blending contemporary ballet with a theatrical narrative. Preljocaj's choreography was bold, exciting, and punctuated with bursts of pure physicality. The costume design was simply stunning – a vibrant riot of colour that matched the playful, almost circus-like feel of the piece. The sheer artistry of the dancers took my breath away. It was pure, untamed creativity at its finest.
Across the Pond: New York's Ballet Buzz
I must say, darling, that New York is a city of endless surprises, where the ballet world is pushing the boundaries, both literally and metaphorically. The New York City Ballet has just unveiled "The Dream," a ballet based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream. Choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky, this work felt very fresh and inventive, taking inspiration from both classic ballet and modern dance. The playful choreography, with a dash of slapstick comedy, had me in stitches, and the costumes – with whimsical fairies and a cheeky Bottom the donkey – were a pure delight to see. New York really does offer the most fantastic array of talented dancers and exciting, diverse choreographers.
A Jewel in the Crown: The Ballet Jewels of Hong Kong
I'm always happy to escape to Asia, and Hong Kong never fails to enchant. The Hong Kong Ballet has really put themselves on the map this season with their stunning performance of "Diamonds" from George Balanchine's "Jewels" trilogy. The technical brilliance of the dancers was jaw-dropping - truly some of the most virtuosic ballet I've ever seen. This ballet is a masterclass in clarity and purity of form, with each movement perfectly articulated and conveying an undeniable emotional depth. The elegance and artistry of the dancers, against the backdrop of exquisite costumes and the glimmering backdrop, transported me to a world of pure beauty. The highlight was certainly the incredible "Emeralds" section - breathtaking!
Onward to New Adventures
Darling, my ballet journey is far from over! Next month promises exciting premieres and re-workings in Berlin and Milan. It's always a thrill to discover new talent and immerse myself in the world of dance in its many guises. It’s an absolute privilege to be a part of such a creative and dynamic community, and I look forward to sharing my adventures with you again next month. Stay fabulous, and happy dancing!
