January 2003 - A Global Tour of Ballet Brilliance

Darling, the year has just begun, and already the world of ballet is in a whirl! From the majestic stages of Europe to the glittering lights of the New World, the artistry and athleticism of ballet continue to enchant and inspire. As a seasoned dancer, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing some truly spectacular performances, and oh darling, I’m simply bursting to share my observations with you.

My first stop took me to Paris, the City of Lights, where I witnessed the Paris Opera Ballet's exquisite production of **“Giselle”.** The ethereal grace of the corps de ballet, a cloud of tulle swirling with an almost heartbreaking fragility, perfectly mirrored the tragic story of a young woman betrayed by love. The male leads, especially the handsome and technically impeccable Ă©toile, **Manuel Legris,** embodied the conflicting forces of love, loss, and vengeful fury. This “Giselle,” darling, is an absolute must-see. It captures the classic romanticism of ballet at its purest.

Then, from the sophistication of Paris, I jetted to the bustling, modern metropolis of New York. The New York City Ballet’s rendition of **“The Nutcracker”** was simply delightful, a sparkling extravaganza of childhood fantasy and joyous exuberance. It was utterly charming to see the talented youngsters of the School of American Ballet perform with such confident charm. Of course, the star of the show was the legendary choreographer, **Peter Martins,** whose ability to inject life and humour into this enduring masterpiece is nothing short of remarkable.

And what's a ballet aficionado's January without a trip to the legendary Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow? I was enthralled by the Bolshoi’s performance of **“Swan Lake,”** a ballet that never fails to captivate. **Svetlana Zakharova** – ah, a truly stunning ballerina – with her exquisite line and expressive grace, absolutely mesmerized me as the Swan Queen. This performance is a masterclass in both technique and emotion, showcasing the very best of Russian ballet.

From the snow-kissed streets of Moscow, I then travelled to the land of sun and sensuality: Spain. At the Teatro Real in Madrid, the exquisite dancers of the Ballet Nacional de España danced the passionate flamenco of **“Flamenco: a Dance of Dreams,”** A vibrant tapestry of emotion and virtuosity, this performance had me absolutely captivated. The pulsating rhythm of the music, the evocative choreography, and the fire in the dancers' eyes - oh, my dear, it was simply breathtaking.

My next adventure brought me to the heart of England, where the Royal Ballet unveiled their spectacular production of **“The Sleeping Beauty.”** With exquisite scenery, lavish costumes and a captivating storybook charm, the ballet took us on an enchanting journey. The dazzling debut of the talented young dancer, **Marianela Nuñez,** in the role of Aurora was particularly enchanting. With her graceful movements, beautiful port de bras and captivating expressiveness, this enchanting Aurora completely stole my heart. I've no doubt, my dear, that Nuñez is set to be a star of tomorrow.

From London, I then flew to the charming and cultured city of Vienna. Here, the Vienna State Ballet’s exquisite performance of **“Don Quixote”** sparkled with its comedic charm and fiery energy. The Spanish-inspired music and choreography brought to life the joyous spirit and playful humour of Cervantes' classic tale. This “Don Quixote”, dear, was an absolute feast for the senses.

And now, as I close out my January ballet tour, I find myself reflecting upon the beauty and power of this art form. The energy and passion of each performance I have witnessed this month reminds me why I remain eternally enamoured with the ballet.

From the fragile beauty of “Giselle,” to the dazzling virtuosity of “Swan Lake,” the whimsical fantasy of “The Nutcracker” and the fiery energy of “Flamenco” , these ballets offer a powerful reminder that dance, at its core, is about the telling of stories and the expression of emotion in a language universal. They are not merely performances, darling, but exquisite works of art that touch our souls and leave an indelible impression.

So darling, take a chance on ballet this year! There’s something for everyone. Be it the classic elegance of “Swan Lake”, the whimsical charm of “The Nutcracker” or the raw passion of “Flamenco: a Dance of Dreams,” ballet promises an unforgettable experience - a chance to see artistry and athleticism at its absolute finest. This, my dear, is what keeps me coming back to the stage year after year - the pure, unadulterated joy of dance.

Now, go on and enjoy the performance, darling! Remember to applaud, and let the art of dance move you.
