The Dance Digest: March 2003
Chasséing Through the Season
My dears, the ballet world is positively brimming with exciting performances this month! It's a kaleidoscope of talent, from the seasoned virtuosos to fresh, innovative choreographers. And believe me, I wouldn't miss it for the world.
The Royal BalletDarling, let's begin with the grand dame of them all, The Royal Ballet. Oh, the anticipation, the thrill of seeing these world-class dancers, like a well-oiled machine, taking the stage! Their current production of Swan Lake is simply exquisite. The swans, feathered and elegant, flow like a silken river. I've always had a soft spot for the "Black Swan" act - there's a dramatic allure that leaves you breathless. And, oh darling, how can I forget the phenomenal performance of the ever-charming Darcey Bussell in the lead. Every turn, every leap, was nothing short of magnificent.
But beyond the classics, The Royal Ballet is daringly pushing the boundaries. The new contemporary piece by Wayne McGregor titled Infra has a haunting energy that's almost electrifying. Its abstract, evocative movements coupled with the stark lighting create a masterpiece of modern dance. Let's just say it's a welcome breath of fresh air, with a bold and unconventional edge.
The Bolshoi BalletA quick trip to Moscow, darlings, was simply irresistible! I found myself immersed in the heart of Russian ballet at The Bolshoi Theatre. Their Giselle, oh my, simply transports you! The drama, the passion, the soaring virtuosity of the dancers - a complete and utter sensory overload in the most wonderful way! The choreography is divine - pure elegance in motion. But for all its grace and finesse, there's a raw power that thrums underneath, a visceral beauty that sets your heart aflutter. I was captivated, I tell you!
But I simply couldn't leave the Bolshoi without seeing their exquisite production of La Bayadère. It was pure visual opulence with its elaborate costumes, dramatic lighting and dazzling grand jetés - just picture rows of exquisitely trained ballerinas soaring across the stage! A grand spectacle of dazzling artistry, I must say.
Ballet in the WestI wasn't able to cross the pond this time around, but I did hear whispers about an enchanting performance of Sleeping Beauty by The San Francisco Ballet. This is a company with a burgeoning reputation for brilliance and an exceptional standard of training, I've heard. My friend Penelope, a seasoned connoisseur, assures me it was absolutely spellbinding.
Another intriguing name that has been floating around is Ballet de l'Opéra National de Paris. I've always admired their style – it's classical and refined yet wonderfully theatrical. They are presenting The Nutcracker - such a wonderful and festive tale, especially during this time of year. Penelope says Sylvie Guillem, in her dazzling form, graced the stage with her legendary artistry.
A Touch of InnovationAs much as I adore the classical ballets, there is a new wave of talent on the scene that deserves attention. And, oh my, are they breaking all the rules. Merce Cunningham has created something truly unique in Inventions at the Joyce Theater in New York. I can't begin to describe it – abstract, evocative, almost surreal. It's daring, unconventional, and I must say, a refreshing delight.
On the Other Side of the SpectrumWhile I am generally a devotee to the pure artistry of classical dance, I was completely blown away by the Stomp production in London. A vibrant celebration of energy and rhythm, it features a brilliant group of performers using just percussion instruments to create an explosive, mesmerizing show. The originality and sheer exuberance are intoxicating. And you don't need to know a thing about ballet to appreciate it!
And let's not forget the amazing dance film "Shall We Dance?", released earlier this year. It doesn't feature professional ballet dancers but rather an ensemble of actors and a beautiful storyline that brought laughter and tears to even this hardened dancer’s eyes.
My Favourite FindsNow for my personal picks, my darlings! Here's where you can find the real gems. The Royal Ballet's upcoming premiere of Romeo and Juliet with Johan Kobborg and Alina Cojocaru promises a passionate and tragic masterpiece.
And I cannot leave this month’s roundup without mentioning the American Ballet Theatre. This esteemed troupe, with its brilliance and elegance, is presenting Cinderella at the Metropolitan Opera House. They are known for their storytelling abilities, and I’m convinced this will be a visually stunning production.
Finishing TouchesMy darlings, it truly is an exciting season! So many magnificent shows to grace the stage, so much artistic expression to enjoy. Let us not forget the tireless work that goes behind every single performance, every elegant pirouette, every expressive gesture. The commitment and dedication of these remarkable dancers is what truly makes them exceptional.
But beyond the technical brilliance, it’s the emotion, the storytelling, that brings the art to life. It's the heart and soul of the dancers, and that is something that cannot be taught, only felt.
So put on your best pair of shoes, dear readers, and enjoy this thrilling journey into the world of dance!
Until next month,
- Amelia
