Oh, darling, it’s simply divine to be back in the swing of things, the spring air buzzing with the promise of endless possibilities. The world, I feel, is opening up after the long, dark months of winter, and so too is the dance scene bursting with creativity and vitality! From the grandeur of Paris to the understated elegance of London, it seems ballet is enjoying a golden moment.

From the City of Lights

Now, let’s be frank, the Parisian ballet scene is often considered the most discerning and sophisticated, so I was rather thrilled to find myself in the glittering audience of the OpĂ©ra Garnier. My dear friend, a retired ballerina herself, and I arrived in a flurry of sequins, sipping champagne with the most divine, bejeweled pastries. And as for the performances? Simply breathtaking!

  • The Ă©toile herself, Sylvie Guillem, absolutely shone in her farewell performance. As she bid adieu to the stage, her grace and virtuosity reached new heights in “The Dying Swan” - she truly captured the fragile beauty and exquisite fragility of this iconic piece.
  • And while I am on the subject of farewells, let’s talk about the Bolshoi Ballet’s visit to Paris, featuring the ever-magnificent Nikolai Tsiskaridze. I do confess to shedding a little tear (well, a “perfectly acceptable” little tear as my friend would put it) at his emotional rendition of “Giselle.” His performance simply left you breathless. It was as if he were giving the role its very lifeblood! Such intense expression, such remarkable skill – and so full of emotion! Such elegance. A true maestro!
  • Of course, no trip to the Paris Opera is complete without a performance of “Swan Lake.” This timeless classic continues to mesmerize with its magical storytelling. And how can one forget the iconic "white acts” with the dancers all beautifully adorned in white tutus, and their delicate movements... ah, exquisite. This season's “Swan Lake” was particularly enchanting, with its newly designed lighting that really did set the scene aglow, emphasizing the dream-like nature of the performance. A feast for the eyes, my darlings, a feast!

From the cobblestones of London...

Across the Channel in London, we find ourselves in the elegant and slightly more restrained atmosphere of Covent Garden, where we were treated to some absolute gems, my dears.

  • First and foremost, a must-see performance of “Cinderella” – now this was a real treat! The young, fresh, talent of Darcey Bussell, truly radiating both elegance and exuberance, really made her “Cinderella” come alive. Her every movement was pure magic.
  • Then we had a spectacular performance by the Royal Ballet’s Margot Fonteyn, a legend in her own right, still breathtakingly elegant at 78. She performed “Sleeping Beauty,” her grace and precision a true inspiration, even though, one cannot escape the passage of time. Still, it was a beautiful moment in ballet history!
  • Of course, we cannot forget the joy of the young talent from the Royal Ballet School in “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” There were simply so many talented youngsters on the stage! It is a ballet that brought out a bit of childhood magic, I couldn't help but feel giddy at their sheer joy and skill, all set against a charming backdrop of magical sets and imaginative choreography! Oh, my dears, it truly captured the whimsical, ethereal magic of the story.

Across the pond and into America...

And now we jet across the Atlantic, for a quick glimpse into the burgeoning ballet scene of the States.

  • There was something incredibly exciting at the New York City Ballet, namely their performance of Jerome Robbins’s “The Four Seasons.” This is simply a classic and oh so moving piece, and the New York City Ballet simply brought it to life! They are simply captivating! Their incredible athleticism is coupled with real tenderness and feeling. You feel like you are experiencing a new season with each step!
  • And a special mention for the American Ballet Theatre. It seems “The Sleeping Beauty,” the ballet so prevalent at the beginning of the year, just refuses to sleep! At the American Ballet Theatre, Michelle Wiles was absolutely radiant as “Aurora” - a beautifully dramatic portrayal! But really, her exquisite elegance and technical prowess made for a truly enchanting performance. And that costume! Pure princess magic!

Across the Pacific ...

On a more personal note, it was also my pleasure to take in an absolute gem from across the Pacific Ocean! This was, to my eyes, a truly revolutionary moment in ballet history!

  • I’m talking, my darlings, about “Mao’s Last Dancer” performed by the Australian Ballet, set in a starkly minimalist studio in Melbourne, which brought to the forefront an unflinching portrayal of Chinese culture. Oh, my darlings, it was both moving and beautifully nuanced! I simply couldn't take my eyes from the stage! Such beautiful and graceful storytelling through the art of ballet.

Oh, and that wonderful company, “The Australian Ballet” ... so vibrant and spirited with an incredibly international appeal! So much beauty and artistic expression from down under, all brought together on the world's stages. Oh darling, how exciting! We all need more cultural exchanges, more cross-cultural expressions of dance to create truly unifying experiences. So, well done, Australians! Well done!

You see, the global scene has been abuzz with captivating dance in its purest form: beautiful, challenging, exciting, and heartbreaking – but most of all, it's all so human. We all feel the raw emotions of life when we see dance in this way.

And as we close out April, it's simply lovely to find so much depth, joy, and imagination in these diverse ballet experiences! The beauty of these performances simply reinforces my belief that dance is more than an art; it’s a force of expression that brings people together and celebrates the beauty and vulnerability of our existence! Oh darling, let’s dance, dance, dance!
