The Prima Ballerina's Journal: June 2005

Darling, the stage has been alive with exquisite performances this month. From the glittering halls of the Bolshoi to the intimate stages of Parisian salons, a whirlwind of elegance and virtuosity has left me quite breathless, I assure you.

Moscow: A Symphony of Strength

Oh, to feel the pulse of Russia thrumming beneath your feet! I had the honour of seeing the Bolshoi's rendition of Swan Lake last week. Their choreography is quite divine, an intoxicating mix of raw athleticism and heartbreaking grace. Svetlana Zakharova was the epitome of ethereal fragility as the Swan Queen, her pirouettes as swift and silent as whispers in the air. Her partner, Nikolai Tsiskaridze, brought a simmering power and passion to the role of the Prince. I found myself quite swept away by his intensity, and that climactic leap, dear reader, sent shivers down my spine!

London: Where Beauty Meets Tradition

The Royal Ballet, of course, always provides a dazzling display of talent. Their production of The Sleeping Beauty was a delightful visual feast. The choreography by Marius Petipa is classic for a reason. Every movement is perfectly poised, elegant and refined. Darcey Bussell, the epitome of effortless beauty, embodied the ethereal Aurora. Her arabesques were as delicate as flower petals, and she infused the role with an innocence that made my heart ache. And let us not forget the glorious costumes, resplendent in velvet and satin. I could almost smell the roses!

Paris: A Whispered Elegance

Now, Paris, darling, Paris... this city whispers romance. I recently attended a stunning production of Giselle at the Opéra Garnier. The entire evening was steeped in an air of ethereal beauty, the choreography imbued with the most delicate grace. I found myself quite captivated by Isabelle Guerin. There is a vulnerability about her, a vulnerability that made Giselle’s heartbreak so palpable, even as her pointe work soared with such strength and lightness. The entire production was truly a testament to the enduring power of the art form.

Beyond the Stage: Dance Across the Globe

Now, you can't talk about the world of dance without mentioning some of the remarkable things happening off the stage. In New York City, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater continues to blaze a trail, with their fearless interpretations of modern dance. Their unique style blends the elegance of ballet with the raw energy and expressiveness of contemporary dance. I find their daring pieces quite invigorating, a truly captivating mix of passion and emotion.

And then, there are the emerging talent. This month saw a spectacular performance by the English National Ballet's emerging young dancers in a choreographic showcase at the London Coliseum. They were a vision in motion! It fills my heart with joy to see such passion for dance burning so brightly in these young artists, promising a new generation of ballerinas and dancers to grace our stages. It's wonderful to see this legacy continue.

My Personal Indulgence: Beyond the Barre

Beyond the stage, my darlings, life has its own elegant dance. I found myself utterly enchanted by an exhibit at the Louvre in Paris this month. A retrospective of Edgar Degas' work dedicated to dancers. Oh, Degas understood the human form with such profound beauty and grace, captured the delicate movements and the raw emotions that accompany each leap and turn. Each canvas felt like a silent performance, a dialogue between artist and viewer.

But, of course, one can't live on art alone! My own personal indulgences included a sumptuous dinner at Maxim's de Paris. That Parisian charm and those incredible desserts, it was all I could do to keep from licking my plate! And then, the impeccable service, and a night at the Théâtre du Châtelet.

And, my dear readers, don’t forget that our ballet class schedules are available online, you can sign up to grace our barre at The Studio, our new class for intermediate to advanced dancers. I find the discipline of a proper ballet class, and the elegant precision of its routines, helps my performances remain strong. I hope to see you there!

Dance Onwards,

Alexandra
