December Delights: A World of Ballet Blooms Oh my dears, what a month it's been for a devotee of the art of ballet! As the festive season sets in and the air crackles with anticipation, the world's stages have been alight with shimmering costumes, graceful leaps, and breathtaking choreography. From the heart of Paris to the bustling energy of New York, I've been hopping on planes (and my favourite Jimmy Choos, naturally!) to soak up the finest ballets this December has to offer. Parisian Perfection: A Night of Romantic Ballet My first stop was Paris, the city of love, and the scene was set for a true ballet spectacle. At the Palais Garnier, the opulence of the venue itself provided the perfect backdrop for the iconic romantic ballet, Giselle. With the delicate beauty of a young ballerina, Sophie (I believe it was Sophie - I'm terrible with names these days!), she absolutely stole my heart as the ethereal Giselle. Her first act performance was like a fragile bloom, her grief for her lost love so authentically portrayed it made me feel the heartache in the pit of my own stomach. And then, her mad scene! The incredible, whirling pirouettes were punctuated by a frenzied grace that truly moved me to tears. The company, of course, was impeccable - the male corps de ballet danced like one breathtaking unit, perfectly executing each step. And who could resist those beautiful, romantic costumes, so pleasing to the eye, and just so *Parisian*, wouldn't you say? **A Modern Twist in New York: Twyla Tharp's Bold Vision** From the gilded grandeur of the Parisian ballet, I took a whirlwind journey across the pond to the vibrant streets of New York City, where modern ballet reigns. The New York City Ballet was showcasing Twyla Tharp's groundbreaking "The Brief Fables of That Long Silence", and, well, I just had to see it! Her bold vision is simply stunning. It is not traditional ballet, my darlings. This ballet breaks the mould. The bold, abstract costumes and set designs, the inventive choreography, which incorporates a mix of balletic moves and contemporary dance techniques...it all combines to create a powerful, exhilarating experience. There's not a tutu in sight. It was definitely not a night for those who crave classical tradition, but oh, the energy! There was such fiery passion from the dancers - one particularly bold move I just had to mention involved a daring mid-air leap over a kneeling ballerina that had the audience gasping! I always tell the young ones to look beyond the perfect pointes and pristine tutus. There is a lot of exciting ballet out there. Ballet with a Dash of Drama: A Captivating "Swan Lake" Next on my agenda was Moscow's famed Bolshoi Theatre, home to some of the world's most gifted ballerinas. They were presenting the classical masterpiece, "Swan Lake". This is the story of a girl's plight between two realms, between innocence and darkness. I have to tell you, there is something about the Bolshoi Theatre, an aura of history that adds to the experience. And as the ballerina rose from the lake in that stunning white tutu (the most exquisite fabric I have ever seen! - the details were immaculate!) my breath just caught in my throat. Her every gesture, every glance was simply perfection - and when her final death throes played out as the music built to its dramatic climax, well, my dears, I felt the sting of tragedy myself. It was a masterfully portrayed production. Beyond Ballet: The Allure of Dance It would be remiss of me to not include the non-balletic highlights of the month. You may be surprised, but I was absolutely enchanted by the Riverdance performance in London's Palladium. This isn't a performance you could simply sit and watch, oh no! You were practically pulled to your feet with the dynamic choreography and the powerful music, and the precision and strength of the dancers - you wouldn't believe the effort involved. But my favourite moment, a secret confession, was when the tap dancer came out with her tap shoes! **An Ode to The Art of Dance: My Own Reflections** My journey this month has reminded me why ballet, dance in all its forms, will always hold a special place in my heart. I spent my own life dancing on stage - and yes, of course I wore tutus, the most beautiful ones you've ever seen! And my legs were strong, they had to be! The hours and hours of practice...it takes so much effort and discipline to achieve true artistry. But I wouldn't trade it for the world, even the hours and hours of standing at the barre, for that perfect plié... And my dears, remember - as I do every time I stand in the wings and feel that pre-show excitement: every step is a journey, every movement tells a story. That is the beauty of dance, the essence of it all, and you never know what stories you might discover when you step into the world of dance, whether it's a classic ballet or a contemporary tour de force, there is always something magical to experience. And it's that magic that I am eternally grateful for. So get your tickets, and go dance!
