A Dancer’s Diary: May 2006

Darling, the spring season is upon us, and with it a kaleidoscope of artistic delights. It's simply intoxicating, my dears, all the whispers and secrets the stage is about to unfold. I've been hopping around the globe, taking in all the latest, and oh, there are such treasures to behold!

Paris: A Whirlwind of Elegance

My Parisian escapade began with a flurry of chassé steps, catching the enchanting Boléro at the Opéra Garnier. The Bolshoi's Ekaterina Krysanova is simply divine! Her movements are a cascade of fluid grace, her port de bras a sonnet of perfect gesture. She literally dances Ravel's composition into life, every glint of her diamante bodice a pulsating spark. Oh darling, it's simply *chilling*!

A few days later, I found myself at the ThĂ©Ăątre des Champs-ÉlysĂ©es, for a sneak peek at the Paris Opera Ballet's latest creation, “Le Sacre du Printemps” by Benjamin Millepied. Now this was *daring*. Millepied, that enfant terrible of the dance world, has taken Stravinsky’s masterwork and crafted it into a thrilling visual feast. It's all about primal urges and savage beauty, set to that electrifying score. It's like watching an untamed jungle explode onto the stage, pure passion and aggression in every twist and turn. Honestly, it made me gasp.

London: A Celebration of Tradition

Across the Channel in London, the Royal Ballet never fails to impress, my dear! I caught “Swan Lake” at the Royal Opera House, a production as familiar as an old friend yet still capable of sending shivers down your spine. The Royal Ballet's principals, Marianela NĂșñez and Carlos Acosta, are absolutely stunning, the epitome of classical grace. NĂșñez is the very essence of vulnerability as Odette, while Acosta is a virile, darkly seductive Prince. And when they dance their duet together, my dear, the stage explodes with emotion, beauty, and raw power.

My evening didn't end there! Afterward, I whipped off to the Sadler’s Wells Theatre for "Dances at a Gathering" by Jerome Robbins, and, well, I just had to say 'thank you' to this masterful choreographer. His piece, inspired by Brahms’ enchanting waltzes, captures the intricate steps and heart-stopping intimacy of love and life in the most poignant and elegant ways.

New York: Where Tradition Meets Innovation

New York always holds a special place in my heart. The energy there is simply magnetic, darling! And, what better way to immerse yourself in that energy than a trip to the New York City Ballet? I saw their stunning rendition of “Apollo,” Balanchine’s masterwork. The sheer athleticism and precision of the dancers is breathtaking. And when the corps de ballet coalesces into a living sculpture, all I could think was ' perfection, perfection!'

Now, of course, I made sure to pop down to The Joyce Theater to see "The American Dance Festival," always a whirlwind of innovation and diversity. It's an exhilarating smorgasbord of new works, fresh ideas, and dazzling performers. This year's highlight was 'The Swan,' by choreographer Robert Battle, a captivating blend of contemporary and traditional dance that explores themes of power, freedom, and resilience. It's simply *heartbreaking*.

Berlin: A Glimpse of History

I finally took a trip to Berlin this season. Oh, it was like stepping back in time! For starters, a trip to the Staatsoper Unter den Linden was absolutely essential. The theatre itself is a breathtaking relic of a bygone era. But it's the history behind its walls that truly captured me, my dear. I saw the "Sleeping Beauty," and was simply mesmerized by the sheer grandeur of it all, every shimmering costume and opulent set a testament to the bygone glories of Russian ballet. It felt both monumental and intensely intimate. I was mesmerized.

Oh, and how can I forget the Berlin Staatsballet's production of “Giselle” at the Schauspielhaus? A masterpiece that's as enduring and exquisite as time itself!

Beyond the Stage: The Enchanting World of Dance

This May was also a whirlwind of ballet extravaganzas! From the elegant "Ballet Gala" held in Vienna’s magnificent Schönbrunn Palace (I had to sport a crĂšme de la crĂšme gown!) to a performance of "Tchaikovsky’s PathĂ©tique Symphony" with a ballet corps that absolutely *stopped* my heart. My dears, there are just so many delightful treasures hidden around every corner.

Of course, a dance-obsessed soul such as I simply must share my favorite new discovery of the season: The 'Art of Movement' exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. It was like a window into the fascinating history of ballet, complete with costumes from the world's most celebrated productions and photographs that brought the movements to life, like magic. I especially adored the costume collection – from the sheer tulle of Swan Lake to the dramatic brocades of La Bayadùre, the craftsmanship was exquisite. It simply inspired my soul.

Musings on Beauty and Strength

My dears, what I've learned this month is this: dance, like life itself, is a journey of constancy and change, of grace and strength, of tradition and innovation. Each performance is a journey through a world of imagination, of pure beauty, of emotional expression. And I, for one, am grateful to be a part of it all. So, as you read this, my lovelies, I know you are out there dancing and swaying to life's music. Embrace every single note! And darling, if ever your soul needs a little lift, simply find your inner rhythm and let it take you away.

And now, darling, until next month! Bisous, bisous.

Our Fashion Fix

Now, every woman knows that a stylish ensemble is simply non-negotiable when one's taking in the artistic delights of the dance world. This season, I’m absolutely obsessed with elegance redefined, think classic black but with a dash of sparkle and some seriously statement jewelry. My dear, a gown of luxurious black satin or a cocktail dress with shimmering beading is a perfect blend of sophistication and glamour for those ballets and gala evenings.

Speaking of sparkle, let's not forget the jewels, my love! A magnificent pendant necklace, maybe a glittering choker, or statement earrings - it's the perfect touch to elevate that dance ensemble. Think about it – those graceful gestures on stage deserve a little bit of fireworks to compliment them. But the most important accessory, darling, is your confidence. Hold your head high, carry yourself with pride and grace. And as you enter that magical world of ballet, know that you'll be dancing into the heart of the most exquisite, exhilarating night of all.
