Darling, it’s a new year, a fresh start, and the dance world is buzzing!

So let’s kick off 2007 with a peek into the world of ballet – a world brimming with artistry, talent, and oh, the divine spectacle of it all.

The New Year Kicks Off With a Bang: The Bolshoi in Moscow

There's simply no denying it, darling, the Bolshoi is back! After a truly dramatic season, the troupe opened their 2007 programme with an utterly divine production of Swan Lake. I'm not going to lie, I nearly wept with joy at the sheer elegance of the ensemble pieces. The ballerinas, those graceful creatures, were simply exquisite, their movements flowing like silken ribbons on the wind.

Svetlana Zakharova, my dear, she is an absolute legend! I've followed her career since she was a wisp of a girl, and she still possesses the most divine extension, and that pure Russian romanticism that sets the heart aflame. Her performance in the iconic final scene was unforgettable. The Bolshoi is a theatre full of such history and drama; there’s truly magic in the air!

The City of Light Does It Again: Paris Gets Elegant

Of course, dear readers, the French know how to do ballet. The Paris Opera Ballet opened with their breathtaking production of Giselle. I'm talking tulle so light it feels like air, costumes so exquisitely crafted that one could practically swoon, and the music? Oh, my darling, the music – utterly transportive!

It was a joy to see this beloved classic brought to life in such a fresh and captivating way. And while it's impossible to choose just one star, I have to mention the stunning étoile, Sylvie Guillem. Her interpretation of Giselle's tortured soul was truly haunting; she conveys raw emotion with such extraordinary artistry. It’s almost unbearable, yet totally unforgettable. And I simply must commend the entire troupe for the sheer brilliance and synchronicity of their dancing.

A New Era Begins: A Dance with The Royal Ballet

Now, while our darlings at the Royal Ballet in London can be quite the sticklers for tradition, I simply adored their latest addition: ‘A Celebration of Choreographers’ It showcased a beautiful array of fresh perspectives and innovative dance techniques. I’m always thrilled to see these new choreographers - such vibrancy and vitality! I admit, there’s an edgy quality to their work, and I think it’s precisely that which excites and intrigues audiences. There’s a certain daring to their artistry. They certainly are a force to be reckoned with.

A particular highlight, though I am bias, was the wonderfully fluid, beautifully fluid piece by Wayne McGregor. Now, Mr. McGregor is truly a creative mind to watch, I’ll have you know. He is pushing the boundaries of the art form with his inventive movement language and bold expression. It’s this new kind of dance, where emotion speaks to us through every gesture, which truly keeps me coming back, you see? The Royal Ballet has such wonderful artists, who seem to embrace this new dynamic with gusto.

Across the Pond: American Flair, American Grace

And who can resist the excitement of American ballet? I found myself absolutely mesmerized at New York City Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker. It is, as we know, an absolute classic, a joyous holiday tradition that never fails to capture the hearts of all. However, this was different. There was such youthful vitality, such joyous, pure, almost childish delight to this performance.

And dear readers, can we even talk about Tiler Peck? Oh, the grace! Oh, the stamina! She is a ballerina of exceptional skill. Peck is just breathtaking to watch, and I find that her interpretation of the Sugarplum Fairy, with all its youthful exuberance, is particularly fitting for this era of such bold artistic experimentation. What a performance!

The Global Dance Network: More Than Ballet

But dear readers, the world of dance extends far beyond traditional ballet! We must also pay tribute to the incredible array of contemporary dance productions around the globe.

I was especially enthralled by the work of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Oh, it was a visual feast! Cunningham is a truly pioneering spirit and the dance pieces he created were simply astonishing – inventive, visceral, and often pushing the boundaries of what we might traditionally consider to be dance.

The choreography was simply mesmerising! Every movement, every step seemed so free-flowing, like a powerful river breaking through to a magnificent expanse. It wasn’t a structured narrative, darling. It was all about freedom, a dynamic play between the dancers and the stage. I am always so delighted to witness innovative work like this, and a reminder to keep my mind open to new, fresh expressions of the dance world.

Our Verdict?

In the realm of ballet, 2007 is poised to be a truly extraordinary year. There is so much new life being breathed into the traditional forms and there’s an excitement in the air for pushing those boundaries – a new generation is taking hold and injecting so much fresh, vivacious energy. It's not all about twirling in tulle anymore – thank heavens!

So keep your eyes open, my dears. It’s a dazzling world out there!
