Pink Tutu Design and Make at www pink tutu com

Darling, it’s a new year, a new you! And what better way to ring in the year than with a fabulous new leotard or tutu? Trust me, this season it's all about taking a classic and making it just a bit more daring. I've got the inside scoop on how to design the most popular piece, guaranteed to turn heads at the barre.

Let's start with the Leotard:

This year, think "sleek, chic, and a little bit sassy."

  • Fabric: Ditch the basic Lycra and opt for something more luxurious. A satin stretch is divine for that luxurious feel. (Don't be afraid of a touch of shimmer!) Look to fabrics like "Lycra Satin", available from places like Sew Happy Fabrics (sewhappyfabrics.co.uk), or The Fabric Place (thefabriccplace.com).
  • Sleeves: I’m loving the statement of a long, slightly puffed sleeve, especially in a rich jewel tone like sapphire blue. It looks effortlessly elegant. You can find perfect fabrics for this in any reputable fabric store.
  • Details: A tiny detail like a diamante encrusted bow, or some beautifully delicate hand-sewn embroidery can take the leotard to another level. Don't go overboard though – keep it subtle.
  • Where to buy: Now, darling, while this project does require some tailoring skill (you don't want any wonky seams!), the pieces you need are easy to find. A quick visit to any local fabric shop or your favourite online retailer, and you'll be well on your way to fashion stardom!

Next, the Tutu:

The secret to a successful tutu lies in making it bold yet refined. Gone are the days of the saccharine-sweet ballerina image.

  • Length: A midi length, stopping mid-calf, is surprisingly elegant. You get that dramatic swoosh without looking too classical.
  • Colour: Black or midnight blue are stunning and work for a wide range of choreography. You want it to be both bold and romantic. I prefer a high quality, soft nylon net in a slightly stiffer grade. Again, a visit to a quality fabric supplier will offer you numerous choices.
  • Decoration: A key element! Instead of using the traditional single layer tulle, experiment with varying tiers – a cascade of black lace layered over your net. It's modern and utterly gorgeous.
  • Bodice: Keep the bodice clean and simple, nothing to distract from the stunning tutu skirt. A black Lycra band can create the perfect bodice.
  • Where to buy: You'll need a solid pair of sewing scissors, and a professional looking sewing machine with some great needles. Your local sewing supplier or department store will have everything you need.

Remember, my darlings, a little bit of artistry can take even the most simple garment to another level. You can't get more stylish than with a piece that truly reflects your own creativity and spirit. So embrace the power of imagination and the joy of sewing, and enjoy the new year!
