February: A World of Whimsy and Wonder
Darling, January was a whirlwind of glittering soirées and a frenzy of fabulous openings. But now, February beckons, and with it comes a refreshing promise of introspection, romance, and of course, the most breathtaking ballets the world has to offer. My month is jam-packed, from the sublime to the spectacular, a delectable feast for the soul!
London, My LoveFebruary is all about love, darling, and London's Royal Ballet always delivers. On the 8th, I'll be swooning over their breathtaking production of "Romeo and Juliet". The achingly beautiful choreography is a timeless classic. I must confess to always having a tear in my eye during the final scene; so tragic, so poignant! This production features some of my favourite dancers. The graceful Alina Cojocaru, so exquisite as Juliet. And don't even get me started on the smouldering brilliance of Edward Watson as Romeo! He simply electrifies the stage.
On a lighter note, on the 15th, The Royal Ballet presents its witty and whimsical take on Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" at the Covent Garden. Now, we all know this ballet can be a bit brutal at times. But rest assured, these talented dancers infuse it with such captivating energy and style. This reimagining promises to be an absolute spectacle - prepare to be dazzled, darlings!
If you're looking for something a little less traditional, "Dances of the Galloping Centaurs" at Sadler's Wells promises a night of wild energy and creative flair. Now, this company might be a little more experimental for some, but trust me, their dance lexicon is electrifying. Get ready to see the stage alive with pulsating rhythms and captivating contemporary choreography!
Paris, Oh La La!Darling, Paris is synonymous with chic, with exquisite beauty, and of course, with dance. My month wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Opera Garnier for the opulent grandeur of "Giselle". The costumes are just to die for, my dears - and let's not forget the spectacular aerial work in Act Two! I’ve heard rumours that the "Black Swan" is making a comeback after its long absence. Now that's a treat to behold, just like the enchanting city itself.
New York, New YorkOf course, darling, a trip across the Atlantic is in order! New York City Ballet's opening night in February features the ever-enchanting "The Sleeping Beauty", and you can bet your bottom dollar I'll be in the front row! New York City Ballet never fails to wow me. And the Tchaikovsky score is simply magical! But be warned, my dears - grab your tickets early as they’ll sell out in a flash!
For a touch of cutting edge artistry, the Paul Taylor Dance Company at the Joyce Theater always pushes boundaries. This contemporary troupe is simply electric. They're known for their unique interpretations of modern movement, their intense energy, and their captivating stage presence. Get ready to see dance like you've never seen it before!
Now, darlings, while in New York, I must go and see the inimitable Mikhail Baryshnikov perform with the American Ballet Theatre in a "gala" program. What an honour to be able to watch such a legendary dancer still on top of his game!
A Journey Through TimeFebruary also whispers of romance and the promise of spring. Take a delightful journey through the history of dance with “The History of Ballet,” presented at the renowned Royal Ballet School in London. Imagine experiencing centuries of balletic evolution in one captivating show! Prepare to be mesmerized by a journey through time with the ballet classics from its elegant, intricate origins, right through to the pulsating, dynamic modern forms.
Now, darling, I wouldn’t recommend this to everyone. It can be rather scholarly and cerebral. But if you're a true ballet enthusiast like myself, this is a real treat, guaranteed to feed your intellectual and artistic hunger.
My Favourite FindsOh darling, remember those breathtaking tutus we saw backstage at the Bolshoi? The one with the delicate feathered edges? Well, I've tracked down a bespoke boutique that recreates them – and they're to die for! If you’re after something special to grace your boudoir, "The Little Black Swan" is the place to visit!
Now, for something absolutely divine, darlings, there’s a new line of artisanal chocolates – “Pas de Deux” – inspired by ballet. Each handcrafted piece is an ode to a different ballet movement, beautifully encased in rich, dark chocolate. They melt in your mouth like a perfect pirouette and come packaged in a chic, hand-painted box. It's the perfect little indulgence after a night at the ballet, isn’t it?
Embrace the ArtDarling, embrace this month and everything it offers. Be a true aficionado, indulge in the art, immerse yourself in the world of dance! I dare you to discover something new. Be captivated by the sublime, the breathtaking, the moving, the powerful, the whimsical world of ballet.
And most importantly, darlings, enjoy yourself. Embrace the beauty, the joy, the artistry of it all!
