September - the Month of Grace and Glamour

Darling, it's that time again – the crisp autumn air, the gentle rustling of leaves, and the promise of enchanting ballets swirling on stages around the globe. As September descends upon us, so too does the exhilarating dance season, a whirlwind of tutus, leaps, and exquisitely crafted movements. Let's dive into the world of grace and grandeur, where artistry meets passion, and each pirouette tells a story.

The Parisian Tapestry

My first stop? Paris, the City of Lights, a haven for everything elegant and exquisitely French. At the Palais Garnier, the legendary Opera Garnier, the Ballet de l’Opéra National de Paris has captivated audiences with their revival of the iconic “La Bayadère” This masterpiece, composed by Ludwig Minkus, weaves a captivating tale of love, betrayal, and ultimately, redemption. A dancer who truly commands the stage is Olga Smirnova, with her exceptional line, controlled fluidity, and undeniable charisma. It was as though her every step were a whisper from the heart of a dancer long past. Her “Kingdom of the Shades” solo was divine - utterly ethereal and beautifully heart-wrenching, every pose held with a poignant fragility. But let's be frank, the entire corps de ballet deserve kudos - they truly created a world of celestial shadows.

But the Parisian Ballet isn't stopping there. It's a veritable feast of balletic beauty at the Palais Garnier. You must not miss "The Nutcracker" (or “Casse-Noisette” as they call it here, with its charming story of Christmas Eve and an incredible stage-craft production). This traditional Christmas ballet brings in its magic at this time of year - a nostalgic journey into childhood fantasy. Look out for Marie, the endearing little ballerina who dreams of an enchanted world! The dancers were perfectly captivating, portraying both the tenderness and strength needed in this enchanting tale.

London’s Balletic Flair

Across the Channel in London, The Royal Ballet is hosting a stunning triple bill, combining innovative works by emerging choreographers alongside timeless classics. It was exhilarating! There was a fiery passion in the contemporary works by Wayne McGregor and the stark modernity of Alexander Ekman, a wonderful stark contrast to the poetic movement of a newly revised "Symphony in C" by George Balanchine - that piece was simply divine. For ballet purists, this will be a glorious experience - a truly fascinating dialogue between contemporary and traditional choreographic styles.

But London is also buzzing with a special exhibition at the National Gallery! A fantastic collaboration with the Royal Ballet called "Dancing with Degas". Degas, you see, was fascinated by ballet, and this captivating exhibition is truly unique, exploring Degas's artistic perspective on the ballet world in its glory. They've got the incredible pastel portraits, the bronze sculptures, and the fascinating insights into this ballet's relationship with art. This truly puts the dancers right before your eyes.

A Journey to the Land of the Rising Sun

Now, darlings, I must tell you about my most recent trip, one that truly ignited my soul – Tokyo. The world-renowned “Nutcracker” production at the Tokyo Ballet is a spectacle. They are known for lavish production design, vibrant costuming, and the most exquisite, breathtaking Christmas scene. My darlings, it's the most decadent and charming, sugar plum dream you could imagine - I assure you it will bring a childlike glee to even the most jaded hearts! It truly reminded me that dance has a universal power to enthral, no matter what language is spoken.

But while I was in Tokyo, it was an absolute pleasure to witness the talent at the Tokyo Ballet's “Giselle”, with its classic story of betrayal and the enduring love of a peasant girl, Giselle. The Tokyo Ballet's choreography reaches beyond simply being captivating; it becomes an ethereal world, bringing the spirit of Romanticism right to the front. Look for the amazing Ksenia Ovsyanick who plays the fragile Giselle. Her talent is simply superb - she completely embraces the spirit of the role!

New York City – The Global Centre

Across the Pacific in New York City, it's a true ballet frenzy, with its plethora of dance companies. At the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, American Ballet Theatre is bringing to life its 2010 repertoire season, full of dynamic productions. This year features everything from choreography by choreographers who have stood the test of time - like Jerome Robbins - to those rising to stardom in their own right, including Alexei Ratmansky.

But darling, New York City is overflowing with ballets, with the City Ballet bringing its iconic “Swan Lake” and “Romeo and Juliet” to its repertoire, which is both inspiring and timeless.

More than Just a Dance

Don't think for a minute, though, that all the great ballet performances have to take place on grand stages. The “Dancing with the Stars” show continues to grace TV screens, attracting a wide range of viewers who adore ballet's charm. While it's not pure ballet, it's a fun, inspiring spectacle that celebrates grace and artistic beauty - something which the younger generation certainly appreciates.

The Ballet Beyond the Stage

Now darling, it's more than just ballet in September - we need to take notice of the events taking place offstage too! The New York International Ballet Competition is going on, and with that, the world’s brightest dance talents come together in a whirlwind of passion. This competition offers both a showcase for upcoming talent and an incredible way to support the growth and diversity of ballet worldwide.

Keep Moving with a Smile

As we move into the last month of summer, remember to enjoy the dance. Dance should never be simply watched; it is a way of life, a passion, an artistry. It takes us away from everyday stresses and offers a sense of freedom, where every pirouette is a story and every graceful leap, a moment of exquisite beauty.

My darling friends, this September promises to be one filled with exhilarating ballets, incredible artistry, and countless inspiring dance moments. Now go out, darling, and find your own little piece of the magic that September brings, and embrace the art of dance - wherever and however it may take you.

I, your dear friend,
Always,

XOXO
