August: A Month of Exquisite Movement
Darling, let's raise a glass of champagne to August. The balmy air, the lingering scent of jasmine, and of course, the promise of captivating ballets that have us twirling with excitement! I've had my little black book scribbled full, as I've been flitting about the globe like a graceful butterfly, indulging in some truly sensational performances. Let me paint a picture of this month's offerings for your sartorial and artistic delight.
Paris, my love
The City of Lights always sets the stage for magic, and this August was no exception. The Palais Garnier buzzed with the electric anticipation of the first performance of the Paris Opera Balletâs production of "La BayadĂšre," choreographed by the brilliant, ever-so-modern Alexei Ratmansky. You know me, darlings, I love a classic reinterpreted! The drama of the Hindu temple and the allure of Nikiya's devotion played out beautifully, Ratmansky injecting a powerful and modern edge into the story. The choreography itself was a visual treat â exquisite partnering, lightning-fast footwork, and the sheer, breathtakingly beautiful skill of the dancers brought tears to my eyes. I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes a defining piece for the Paris Opera Ballet, don't you think?
Speaking of iconic ballets, I absolutely couldn't miss the "Swan Lake" revival at the OpĂ©ra National de Paris, again featuring Ratmanskyâs refreshing choreography. The sheer brilliance of the swans' adagio, so perfectly mirrored by the elegant black costumes, was spellbinding. My darling, this was pure theatre! And don't get me started on the exquisite costumes by the legendary Christian Lacroix - a triumph of vibrant, sumptuous colors against a dark stage. One almost forgot about the tragic storyline as we were mesmerized by the sheer spectacle and the effortless skill of the dancers.
London, darling
Next stop, the Royal Ballet in London - a quintessential British ballet experience. While "Swan Lake" might be a favourite for many, "Giselle" holds a special place in my heart, and the Royal Balletâs August performances did not disappoint. The sheer poignancy of Giselle's mad scene, her love, her betrayal, and her tragic fate, is simply heartbreaking. And speaking of heartbreak, how could I ever forget the heart-stopping final adagio of Act II? So beautifully rendered by the entire cast, it's simply perfection, the tragic story beautifully punctuated by the incredible dancing.
While at Covent Garden, darling, I couldn't miss a glimpse of "Manon," an enduring tale of a spirited, passionate, yet ultimately tragic young woman. I have a confession, darling. This story had me sobbing openly. There was a raw honesty, a vulnerability in the portrayal of Manon's heartbreak, that I felt quite personally. But what truly set this "Manon" apart was its absolutely dazzling choreography â modern yet incredibly elegant. I could not tear my eyes away! It reminded me so much of the power and emotion of dance â truly magical!
New York City: The City that Never Sleeps (nor dances, for that matter!)
Ah, New York. What would summer be without a visit to this fabulous metropolis? I saw a particularly exciting performance at the Metropolitan Opera - the world premiere of "The Minutes," a ballet in three parts, a collaboration of sorts between the legendary Jerome Robbins and a new generation of talented dancers, an homage to Robbinsâ iconic dance sequences, all performed in his unique style and with exquisite skill.
Beyond the Big Apple
But there's so much more out there, darlings, so much more!
- In Sydney, the Australian Ballet presented a new version of "The Sleeping Beauty," that absolutely enthralled the audience with stunningly beautiful, and truly dazzling, new costumes that showcased the graceful, fluid movement.
- In Berlin, the Staatsballett Berlin offered a âcontemporary dance showcaseâ with a bold selection of choreographers from the best international talents and an evening of captivating innovation that truly pushes the boundaries of contemporary ballet.
- And finally, in Tokyo, the stunningly graceful performance by the Tokyo Ballet brought tears to my eyes as I enjoyed the artistry of the "Swan Lake." I couldnât help but feel that thereâs something about that delicate and fragile swan theme that stirs a womanâs heart â it is, indeed, a universal dance of love and heartbreak!
This month, darling, dance has taken me on a whirlwind of emotions. I've laughed, I've cried, I've been breathless, I've been utterly enthralled by the exquisite movement and beauty on display. The joy of watching a ballerina effortlessly soar, the elegant grace of a pas de deux, the passion and drama expressed through the most delicate of gestures - it's simply unforgettable.
So, my dears, as August glides gracefully into September, remember, there is beauty to be found everywhere â you just need to know where to look. May the dance of life keep you enthralled! Until next month, darlings.
