Ballet En Pointe: October 2012
Darling, October is upon us, and the air is crisp, the leaves are changing, and the ballet season is in full bloom! This month promises a veritable feast of artistry and grace, so put on your most fabulous frock, my darlings, and prepare to be transported.
Royal Ballet's "Manon" at Covent Garden
Let's begin our journey with a true icon: The Royal Ballet. Now, darling, I've seen my fair share of "Manon"s over the years, but this production at Covent Garden is truly special. I do love the vibrant colour, the costumes by designer, Jean-Marc Puissant, they are absolutely to die for! Such beautiful, sumptuous colours. Marianela NuĂąez is simply divine as Manon - her interpretation is both heartbreaking and triumphant. She's got the perfect blend of innocence and passion, leaving me completely spellbound! And her partner, Vadim Muntagirov, a wonderful dancer in his own right, gives a stellar performance as the young, lovestruck Chevalier des Grieux, their chemistry sizzling on stage! This production is an absolute must-see!
New York City Ballet's "Jewels" at Lincoln Center
Now, my dears, New York City Ballet is renowned for its innovative spirit, and "Jewels" is a prime example. Itâs a glittering showcase of three ballets, each with its own unique personality and mood. Each section, representing the gemstones - rubies, emeralds, and diamonds - was simply spectacular, the sets were quite stunning! The emerald section was divine, very romantic, beautifully choreographed by Balanchine. Each dance and gesture evoked love and longing! A beautiful dance of jealousy!
It is truly an unforgettable ballet journey. If you happen to be in the Big Apple, be sure to indulge yourself in this delightful, exquisitely polished gem.
Hamburg Ballet's "Giselle" at the Hamburg State Opera
Hamburg Ballet has a special place in my heart - itâs always been known for its strong dramatic flair, and their production of "Giselle" certainly does not disappoint. My darling, this is a powerful story, and itâs so beautifully told here! You truly feel for Giselle, the village maiden betrayed by a prince, it is very affecting! And, I'm thrilled to see this particular "Giselle" at the Hamburg State Opera, the setting is simply magical - an opulent theater with a rich history, that transports you to a fairytale!
Paris Opera Ballet's "Swan Lake" at the Palais Garnier
One cannot talk about ballet without mentioning "Swan Lake" and no "Swan Lake" comes close to that at the Paris Opera! This company always produces top quality shows, the most important things - the dancers, the orchestra, and the choreography, everything comes together. They present an enchanting âSwan Lakeâ, the classical dancers in white tutus, with their iconic swan arms, the soaring jumps, are always spectacular. I am truly spoilt for choice in the ballet world - these dancers are stunning! You know how much I adore a classic!
Ballet-Inspired Fashion: Trends to Embrace
While weâre on the subject of enchantment, darling, let's talk about ballet-inspired fashion! It's a timeless trend that never goes out of style. Look for sleek lines, flowing fabrics, and of course, tulle - the very essence of a ballerina's grace! I love a fitted black dress, you can never go wrong. But also, add some colour. If youâre bold enough, consider a colourfully-printed flowing chiffon gown with a deep plunging neckline, cinched in at the waist. The key, as always, is to strike a balance between femininity and sophistication. Remember, elegance and good taste never go out of style!
The International Ballet Gala in Vienna
The International Ballet Gala in Vienna is a glittering affair, showcasing the very best dancers from around the globe. This year's line-up is a whoâs who of the ballet world, with talented and gifted dancers coming together, an explosion of energy and skill. And of course, Vienna's Musikverein is one of the most gorgeous concert halls in the world. It's truly a breathtaking experience. Be sure to have your little black book at the ready, you will not find a better time to spot your favourite ballet star! Donât miss it.
The Bolshoi Ballet's "The Sleeping Beauty" in Moscow
My darlings, the Bolshoi Theatre, itâs truly an architectural marvel. And their "The Sleeping Beauty" is an iconic ballet. This is a ballet youâve likely seen countless times, and yet they still make it exciting. The storyline is enchanting and the set and costumes are stunning. The choreography by Marius Petipa is pure genius, and they bring an elegant classical approach. Itâs the kind of show that simply takes you away.
American Ballet Theatre's "Romeo and Juliet" at the Metropolitan Opera House
I am eternally grateful that my good friend Michela introduced me to American Ballet Theatre many years ago, they really do live up to their name. American Ballet Theatreâs âRomeo and Julietâ is another enchanting classical piece that never disappoints! The beautiful story, the amazing dancing, everything. It was absolutely captivating, this performance truly brings out the passion in the tragic loversâ romance. It's the kind of performance that stays with you long after the curtain falls!
A Glimpse into the Ballet World: An Interview with Natalia Osipova
Now, we all have our favorite ballet stars and I canât get enough of the spectacular Russian ballerina, Natalia Osipova. With such effortless skill and artistry, she mesmerises! I had the opportunity to interview her recently, where she discussed her training, her favourite roles, and her insights on the world of ballet today. It was an honour to chat with her - a true icon and inspirational to all of us. Natalia is an artist and her interpretation of the classics and modern choreography, all bring out a very moving story and powerful emotions. I look forward to seeing her dance many more times!
Tips for a Ballet-Worthy Ensemble
So, my darlings, the ballet season is here! And thereâs no better time than now to update your look. A touch of elegance is all you need!
Here are some stylish suggestions for your perfect ballet evening:
â˘Â   Opt for classic and sophisticated designs in your wardrobe - the little black dress, the perfectly fitted pantsuit. And my absolute favorite - a well-tailored skirt with a soft top, a great option for ballet night!
â˘Â   Look for designs that embody grace and movement - like a simple yet flowing silk gown, flowing chiffons, light lace, and fluid satins - all great for ballet. You should never be restricting your movement and feeling comfortable - after all, you want to look effortless and enjoy the performance!
â˘Â   Accessorise strategically - delicate jewellery and beautiful handbags can make your ensemble come together, be sure your jewellery is tastefully simple, and keep handbags understated - just like your shoes - think classic pumps, or heels that offer comfort with the right ankle straps or open toes. Choose styles that elongate your legs and wonât distract from the stunning ballet performances! After all, ballet is a timeless art form - and so is classic, elegant fashion. And lastly, remember - itâs all about expressing your individual style. Embrace the elements you love!
In Conclusion
With so many spectacular performances unfolding around the globe this October, we can indulge ourselves with world-class ballet. There's truly something for everyone - from the time-honoured classics to the cutting-edge contemporary works! Remember to check out the international galas and new production - there's nothing quite as magical as a live ballet performance! Enjoy it my dears! Do try to visit these performances in person - as I am sure they will not disappoint!
Now, do enjoy this incredible season and do share your own experiences - your favourite productions and dances - with me and with your fellow ballet lovers! Remember to stay elegant and glamorous always.
Until next month, darling, I wish you all a truly spectacular and elegant season! xx
