Darling, oh darling, can you believe it? March! That fabulous time when spring just starts to peep through its pale eyelashes and whispers promises of longer days and floral scent filled air. But we all know a ballerina's world is not all sunshine and daffodils, especially not this one! My dearest, the sheer energy it takes to stay in shape through this turbulent time, well, it’s a wonder anyone makes it to opening night. And this month? Goodness me, March has been absolutely jam packed! I haven’t stopped spinning. From New York to Moscow, London to Shanghai - I've seen it all, dear! Let me fill you in, my petal, on just some of the most dazzling highlights:
New York: City of Dreams (and Degas)Starting in New York, where else? That heady mix of glamour and gritty underbelly. I had a real "ah, la la!" moment at the Metropolitan Opera, the company danced their heart out. We're talking tutus that were pure tulle and diamonds - I practically swooned in my box seat, darling! The Degas costumes - ah, exquisite!
- 'La Sylphide': A real, truly romantic revival. The ballerina, oh her light footwork - such elegance! You wouldn't have thought she was even touching the ground! And the score, utterly divine.
- 'Swan Lake': Now, this production... it was the quintessential tale of love and sacrifice. And of course, the *double role* is the ultimate ballerina test. They did *not* disappoint. I do wish they had included a touch more drama, the staging was a tad too, well, traditional for my taste, if I'm being completely honest.
The Met is always good for a good time. And while you’re there, make sure you have afternoon tea at Bergdorf Goodman's – oh my, darling, the delicate cucumber sandwiches, and those divine petit fours...heaven on earth, you know what I mean.
London Calling:Now on to London! I had been anticipating The Royal Ballet’s rendition of Swan Lake for weeks, I simply couldn’t wait. The Royal Ballet are certainly a force to be reckoned with and *that* principal dancer (her name escapes me right now, oh my, this terrible old brain!) has such amazing strength. The jumps! They left my jaw on the floor!
- ‘Giselle’: Darling, it truly is an enduring masterpiece. The beauty of this ballet never ceases to amaze me. You really get caught up in the emotions, the story... And the dancing? Utterly exquisite. Every movement was so delicate, it was simply stunning.
Then off to the theatre for the premiere of "Ballet for a Broken Heart," a wonderfully contemporary dance piece, with themes of heartache and loss woven into each stunning choreography. I admit, the music was slightly off-putting, a little too melancholic for my usual taste, but the dancers poured their very souls onto the stage, and their raw passion kept me utterly captivated.
And you know, darling, I always find that the post-show chit-chat at the Garrick Club is just as important. You meet all the movers and shakers in the arts world – you never know, dear, where the next inspiration might strike! I’m afraid I always feel rather jaded, just a tad, by the constant whirl and whir of ballet society after a long season, but I do make an exception for those intimate, candlelit dinners.
The Magic of Moscow:It wouldn’t be a real ballet adventure without a trip to the Bolshoi Theatre. Of course. Such history, you simply feel its legacy in every rustle of the silk curtains. And dear, you should have seen the costumes! The colours, the intricate details... like stepping into a glittering, forgotten fairytale.
- ‘The Nutcracker’ : Oh, to relive that childhood magic again. The Sugar Plum Fairy... it’s as if the little ballerina, she just levitates right before your eyes. This time, however, I couldn’t help but feel the magic had dulled somewhat, with a hint of over-familiarity and predictable grandeur. You’d be surprised by what age makes one realize. The stage looked a little dusty and the sets a little tired. I wonder what's on the director's mind… perhaps a much-needed refurbishment is in order.
After the Bolshoi, I popped into a few smaller theatres - so exciting to see the fresh and passionate up-and-comers. Some truly phenomenal talent on the Russian scene! One dancer stood out for me: young, fiery, and with a talent for conveying such raw emotion on stage... quite captivating. And those long legs - I was mesmerised! She's someone to watch, dear. Someone to watch closely, I’d say.
Shanghai: The City that Never Sleeps... And Dances!A whirlwind journey through Shanghai's streets then! From the sleek modern towers to the enchanting winding lanes – truly, an unforgettable experience. There’s a certain air, you know, a spirit, to the whole city, like it's always on the move, in motion, like a swirling skirt. And that’s precisely how the city felt in March! My love, I tell you!
- ‘Sleeping Beauty’: Now this production was breathtaking, darling! The choreography was beautifully fluid and the music, oh my, such exquisite emotion! It’s like a whole world unfolded in front of your eyes, from the deep green woods to the magnificent court of the palace.
The Shangai Grand Theatre… a perfect fusion of eastern elegance and contemporary design. You've heard about my fondness for the ‘old world charm' but even I couldn’t deny how wonderful the new theatre is – the light, the air, a wonderful place to watch the arts bloom. I attended an utterly captivating show where the choreographer had taken elements from traditional Chinese ballet and intertwined them with contemporary techniques and western classical music. You can see, they're truly making a name for themselves here! Oh, darling, to see what the future holds, the talent waiting in the wings...
Lasting Impressions:Darling, the sheer power and athleticism, the artistic artistry and grace I witnessed during this global ballet blitz had me absolutely mesmerized. I’m not quite as sure of my own pliés after witnessing such phenomenal skill! But we mustn’t be afraid, my petal, to embrace those small moments of exhaustion, of tired limbs, because they just add another layer to our ever evolving stories. For each ballet that touches your soul, each arabesque perfectly performed, each dancer who spills their heart out on the stage... it's all part of our magical journey, my love, our very own ballerina fairytale!
I hope I have you truly inspired and perhaps even feeling a little, how do you say, *svelte* – oh how I miss those days. But don’t you worry, you will catch up to me with all that March inspiration, all that artistry!
So much to see, so much to experience! Oh darling, if only time stood still for us. And for now, darling, I’m off to relieve my swollen ankles with a rather fabulous hot oil massage and glass of Chardonnay! I think I deserve a little treat! What's good for the soul is good for the body! Oh darling, let's toast to our neverending passion! Until next time!
