Oh Darling! A whirl around the world this October.
My darlings, October is upon us, and what an exciting month for us lovers of ballet! The worldâs stages are ablaze with glittering tutus and breathtaking leaps, and my dancing heart simply cannot contain itself. I have flown (first class, naturally) across the globe, squeezing in as much exquisite choreography as I could manage in this little black book of mine, for you. Let me regale you, my loves, with the wonders I witnessed...
A Night at The Bolshoi, Moscow, Russia
Oh, how I love Moscow! And this time, darling, the Bolshoi Theatre delivered as always. The legendary Bolshoi Ballet, in all its glorious pomp and circumstance, unveiled a revival of **âGiselleâ**, a classic for a reason. The staging was truly divine, a beautiful balance of traditional grandeur and subtle modernization. But the heart and soul of any production, as I always say, lies with the dancers. And oh, the talent that shone! Ekaterina Krysanovaâs Giselle was ethereal, a beautiful portrayal of a young woman in love, heartbroken and ultimately redeemed. I shed a tear, my loves. I must confess! The impeccable performance by Vladislav Lantratov as Albrecht, the handsome but deceitful count, provided a potent counterpoint to Krysanova's vulnerable Giselle. Together, their artistry elevated this timeless tale of love, betrayal, and the supernatural to new heights. I urge you, if you haven't seen it, grab a ticket! The experience is simply sublime.
Parisian Dreams: âL'après-midi d'un fauneâ at the OpĂŠra Garnier, Paris, France
What is more French, darling, than **âL'après-midi d'un fauneâ**? Not much, I'd say! My trip to the OpĂŠra Garnier wouldnât have been complete without catching a glimpse of this iconic work. The Paris Opera Ballet always knows how to capture the beauty and mystique of this ballet. The exquisite costumes and the suggestive movements truly evoked a sense of pagan ritual and eroticism, but always, of course, in the most refined manner possible. It was almost like watching a dream unfold in front of me. It truly was a divine, artistic moment to savour. My favorite aspect of this production was the undeniable interplay between the dancer and the music by Debussy. The two danced beautifully together!
An Ode to Swan Lake at the Royal Opera House, London, England
Of course, my darlings, I couldnât resist returning to my home turf, the iconic Royal Opera House. The majestic Royal Ballet, renowned for its impeccable technique, unveiled a new, oh-so-fresh and daring production of **âSwan Lakeâ**. Now, donât worry my lovelies, I was hesitant about a new production, we know this classic ballet, but what a wonderful surprise. This wasn't a traditional revival; instead, the choreographic brilliance, led by the one and only Wayne McGregor, introduced a thrilling interpretation of the traditional, with moments of sheer, utter poetry!
What's so brilliant about McGregor is that he isn't afraid to push boundaries while still maintaining the beauty of classic balletic movements. He truly elevated this tale of love, betrayal, and fate to a completely new level, with his own distinctive vocabulary. You may be familiar with the choreography already, darling, but the intricate footwork and fluid grace made it a delightful journey each and every time, new.
Oh, the dancers! I must give special mention to Natalia Osipovaâs magnificent performance as Odette/Odile. She conveyed a beautiful, almost heartbreaking fragility in Odette, yet an enchanting sensuality and undeniable strength in Odile. The power and depth in her dancing left me spellbound. The entire cast was outstanding, especially the swans - so strong, yet fluid, creating a powerful and awe-inspiring tableau. This production, my loves, is a must-see. A definite triumph. And yes, darling, I wept again.
The Enchanting World of âLa Bayadèreâ at the Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg, Russia
The Mariinsky Theatre, that architectural masterpiece in St Petersburg, my darlings, was where I ventured to next. Oh, what a treasure of a performance, their production of **"La Bayadère"**, one of my all-time favourites, remains truly spectacular. I've seen it several times but this time was special. Perhaps because of the sheer elegance of Diana Vishneva as Nikiya. Oh my, her dancing was ethereal, breathtakingly light, and delicate! Her every move radiated beauty and grace.
The story, if you haven't seen this ballet, is full of passion and exoticism, with its dazzling choreography, sumptuous sets and captivating characters. This ballet is always a favourite of mine! It is a pure delight, a mesmerizing tale set amidst the dazzling beauty and intrigue of India, which I find oh so utterly romantic! The celebratory finale - a whirlwind of colour, grace and skill- was nothing short of astounding. And again my dear, yes! The tears fell.
And Then Thereâs âThe Nutcrackerâ at the New York City Ballet, New York City, United States
To New York I ventured to see the New York City Ballet perform the timeless masterpiece that is **âThe Nutcracker.â** It was a glorious, vibrant, and utterly charming performance. As always, Iâm impressed with this exceptional company and this new, innovative production. It is everything I've come to expect from this powerhouse of a ballet company, but even better this time around, if possible.
The incredible choreography is simply magical, evoking a world of wonder for young and old. What can be more joyful and moving than a childâs delight at a world of sweets, sugar plum fairies and brave mice? There was sparkle, energy, a sense of fun and an overall joy that was truly infectious! The company showed its absolute power with this production. My loves, it will be difficult to go anywhere else in the world to watch âThe Nutcrackerâ after experiencing this show. It was simply phenomenal!
Oh! To Dance Amongst The Stars in âThe Sleeping Beautyâ at the Royal Ballet of Flanders, Antwerp, Belgium
Finally, I journeyed to the fascinating and elegant city of Antwerp for the splendid production of **âThe Sleeping Beautyâ** at the Royal Ballet of Flanders. My love, this was a production that was elegant in its grandeur and oh, so utterly romantic. From the moment the music started to the final bow, I felt swept away, transported to a world of magical princesses, brave princes and enchanted forests. I always adore the music and the graceful, yet sometimes intense story, and the dancers with the Royal Ballet of Flanders, simply dazzled.
Each step, each turn, and each leap was perfection - a harmonious blending of strength and delicate artistry. I was utterly enraptured by their performances. And the set designs, my dears! So beautiful. The designers must have been inspired by an ancient fairy tale. There was a real, authentically crafted quality to everything on stage! The whole experience was truly unforgettable! The Sleeping Beauty - she was truly a delight, her elegance, poise, and sheer perfection in the role, captivated all of us, right down to the last pirouette. This is a production you simply cannot miss, it's a triumph from start to finish!
Well, my lovelies, this has just been a small glimpse into my exhilarating ballet journey. There are still countless performances that have my dancing heart fluttering.
Oh, do look out for *Ballet Black*, in their beautiful and inspiring *Swan Lake* production in the UK and be sure to check out the *Dutch National Ballet* with their captivating performance of *The Rite of Spring* if you are lucky enough to be in the Netherlands. Oh, and how I am excited to see *Rambert* performing the groundbreaking *In the Flesh*, I hear they have an edgy, yet exquisite choreography. These are just a few other, incredibly wonderful shows that are gracing stages around the world. Don't miss them.
Now, darling, until next time!
