Darling, February flew by in a flurry of tutus and tiaras! The world of ballet, as always, offered a delectable smorgasbord of productions, both old and new, to tantalise the eye and stir the soul. Letā€™s have a quick peek, shall we, at some of the highlights?

A Festive Frenzy

February began in glorious fashion with the annual **Royal Ballet**ā€™s presentation of **"The Sleeping Beauty"** at the Royal Opera House. Now, Iā€™ve seen more "Sleeping Beauties" than I care to count, but this particular one, featuring the sublime **Natalia Osipova** and the utterly captivating **Vadim Muntagirov**, left me utterly breathless. Osipova, with her quicksilver precision and effortless grace, brought an ethereal quality to Aurora, while Muntagirov, with his virile intensity and lyrical leaps, was the perfect Prince. The corps de ballet, looking impeccably crisp in their candy-floss tutus, seemed to dance as one, their movement like a rippling stream, perfectly mirroring the grand romanticism of Tchaikovsky's score. It was a night of sheer magic.

Across the Atlantic, the **American Ballet Theatre** in New York was offering its own feast of classical ballet, opening its Spring season with **"Swan Lake"** , one of the worldā€™s most beloved ballets. With **Misty Copeland**, that exquisite beauty, dancing the role of Odette/Odile, there were, of course, sold-out audiences for every performance. Honestly, watching her transition from the innocent, ethereal White Swan to the alluring, beguiling Black Swan is something to behold, the ultimate masterclass in physicality and emotion. She made the iconic double role completely her own. What a phenomenal talent. I did feel the choreography felt a little dated - and perhaps lacked a touch of the contemporary that weā€™ve come to expect in recent years - but frankly, whoā€™s quibbling when weā€™re graced with such exceptional talent?

A Touch of the Modern

While the big companies were delighting their audiences with traditional works, contemporary choreographers were causing a stir with their edgy, innovative ballets.

In Copenhagen, the **Royal Danish Ballet**, which weā€™ve all known and loved for its classical perfection, presented **"The Garden"** , a stunning, and rather startling, work by the contemporary dance powerhouse **Wayne McGregor**. It featured an unexpected combination of classical techniques, intense physicality, and deeply philosophical themes, all set against the backdrop of an ever-changing digital landscape. It was definitely not for the faint-hearted! McGregor is such a gifted visionary. He probes the boundaries of movement and the very essence of what constitutes dance. Itā€™s quite invigorating, my dear, to see these classical ballet dancers embracing new concepts and taking bold creative risks. The whole thing was incredibly daring, thrilling and unsettling. A real eye opener!

And then there was **"The Art of Asking"** , a new ballet by the **Nederlands Dans Theater** , choreographed by the very talented **Polina Canfield**, presented in The Hague. I loved it! Inspired by the non-fiction bestseller by **Amanda Palmer**, it explores the dynamics of collaboration and community in the digital age, using a diverse range of dance styles. From the athleticism of contemporary ballet to the fluidity of hip hop, it was like a delicious ballet buffet, beautifully layered and full of flavour. I just love that sense of freedom of movement and exploration, that raw, unbridled energy that contemporary dance provides. I also adored the vibrant, multicoloured costumes! Oh, and the fabulous score was simply stunning, by **Max Richter**. You can really sense, I believe, the powerful influence of theatre and performance art on the choreography. The whole thing, it was so raw and captivating! I left feeling strangely cleansed and full of joy.

Beyond The Stage

Now, ballet doesnā€™t just exist on stage, you know! The art form is expanding its repertoire, embracing new and daring ideas, spilling out onto the streets and onto the screen. I couldnā€™t believe the sheer talent, creativity, and sheer diversity on display at the **International Choreographic Festival** in **Paris**. Now, I donā€™t mean to brag, my dear, but the annual ā€œBallet Fashion Awardsā€ there is my absolute favourite. It was a glittering event, with everyone looking simply exquisite, and this year a few particularly daring styles in dancewear truly caught the eye. Now, imagine if **Iris van Herpen** ever designed a ballet costume - I can hardly wait for that moment!

I also couldnā€™t resist indulging my guilty pleasure ā€“ watching a new documentary about the worldā€™s leading male ballerinas. This one, ā€œDancing With the Starsā€ , follows three male dancers ā€“ one from the **American Ballet Theatre**, one from the **Royal Opera House**, and one from the **Paris Opera Ballet** ā€“ as they train, perform and deal with the pressures of career in a world where female dancers often take the limelight. Itā€™s beautifully filmed, emotionally engaging, and just shows the incredible dedication and passion that drives these remarkable individuals. Oh, I can tell you, those strong, sinewy bodies, and the effortless athleticism that male ballet demands ā€¦ there is a certain elegance to it that just makes my heart beat faster!

February certainly was a month full of delightful dance adventures, with a rich tapestry of emotions, styles, and themes to explore. I must say, my dear, it never ceases to amaze me, the artistry, creativity, and raw power of this art form we hold so dear. I canā€™t wait for March to unleash even more surprises!

And speaking of surprises, why not treat yourself to a performance this month? Indulge in the magic and sheer beauty of the dance ā€“ it's the perfect pick-me-up and sure to fill your soul with joy. As for me, Iā€™ll be back next month to share more ballet buzz ā€“ keep those toes tappinā€™!
