A Tour De Force
Dearest readers,
Welcome to August! What a glorious month to be a ballerina, especially as the summer sun stretches languidly into long days. From the crisp breeze on a cobbled square in Europe to the sweltering humidity of Asia, I've been swirling and pirouetting around the globe to bring you the most enchanting ballets of the moment.
Here is a selection of highlights to savour, just as a perfectly-aged champagne - my darling, the dance, is a sparkling experience like no other!
Let's Talk Paris
This month I started in the City of Lights, and darlings, it really was a fairytale. The **Paris Opera Ballet** is a must for every ballerina. Their new interpretation of **Giselle** was positively transcendent. The delicate beauty of the choreography was amplified by a phenomenal ensemble. The ethereal **Marie-Agnès Gillot** as Giselle simply melted my heart - a sublime performance!
Oh, I mustn't forget the dazzling costumes - every layer of tulle and velvet so meticulously chosen, each glittering bead, they spoke to me of exquisite artistry. I did see a few young, perhaps a tad too exuberant, dancers that, frankly, needed to spend a little more time in their tutus - but darling, what is art without its little flaws? There's a reason they call it ballet!
Back to the Classics, Darling
Then it was on to Vienna - **Vienna State Ballet** is the epitome of elegant grace. Their revival of **Swan Lake** had me mesmerized. There was a beautiful simplicity in the classic moves, that almost touched the heart in its pure artistry. The male dancers, simply magnificent.
One minor point I did find: some of the stage direction was a little lacklustre - there were too many fleeting moments. One must hold a gesture just a beat longer, you know? Let that emotion unfold like the unfolding of the wings of the white swan herself, my darling.
And speaking of beautiful wings - **Tchaikovsky** was, of course, sublime, but, darling, do you ever think the music is just a tad overplayed? A little tired? Perhaps a different composition would freshen up this magnificent production.
Contemporary Fusion
The **Royal Ballet** in London, my dear, that is always a thrill. The energy and excitement just thrum through the whole theatre, you just want to rise from your seat and pirouette along with them, wouldn’t you agree? And their **Contemporary Season**, oh my! It was as if a new kind of dance were being born right before our eyes. An exhilarating mix of tradition and daringly modern expressions. It pushed all the usual boundaries - quite shocking in some parts, I have to admit. The bodies were so limber - some truly breathtaking extensions that defied gravity, darling! Absolutely mesmerising, even if it did feel a tad unsettling at times.
Ballet as an Art Form
Now, darlings, it must be said that the world of dance can sometimes get caught in the currents of mere spectacle. But ballet is an art, not just showbiz, is it? I was captivated by the **Nederlands Dans Theater** production in Amsterdam - a series of short, captivating pieces with real depth, which brought out a fresh understanding of what movement can say, how it can speak to our very souls.
This is why I believe we must support the art of dance, my dear - we have a duty to nourish this wonderful world of creative expression and keep it fresh, keep it evolving. For it is not just beautiful movement, it's storytelling on an altogether deeper level.
Now don’t get me wrong. I am not averse to the spectacle - oh no, far from it. The extravagant sets, the shimmering costumes, they add so much! But I do love to see how contemporary choreographers weave their stories within these structures. It takes so much talent and dedication! And as you see in the modern productions that take your breath away - sometimes it is the subtlest things, the small glimpse of an eye, the tremor of a hand, that can have the most impact.
But Let's Not Forget Our Jewels, Darling
And finally, on a beautiful evening under the Californian sun, it was time for a truly American treat - **American Ballet Theatre** in New York. They opened with a glorious new production of **The Sleeping Beauty**. All the lavish costumes you could ever imagine, my darling! The colour, the romance - simply ravishing!
Then we have the wonderful **Misty Copeland**, such a radiant star! I was lucky enough to have lunch with her this very week - so enchanting, you’d love her, darling! I had a quick sniff of her perfume, oh darling - so intoxicating, it must be her signature scent, I’ll be asking about it as soon as possible.
**An Exhilarating Conclusion
So that, dear readers, is my whirlwind dance tour of August. The energy, the passion, the sheer joy of seeing how beautifully and expertly the dancers express themselves. It's a privilege, an honor, to be part of this wonderful, wonderful world.
As ever, please let me know if there are any particular performances, any certain ballerinas you'd like to hear about. Write and tell me all.
Until next time!
Yours sincerely,
*The Ballerina*
