A Ballet Fan’s Global Whirl: May 2022 My darlings, The first blush of spring has arrived, and with it a glorious bloom of ballet productions across the globe. From the venerable stages of Paris and London to the burgeoning dance scenes of Asia, there’s something for every discerning ballet devotee. This month, my adventures have taken me on a whirlwind tour from the sublime to the simply spectacular, with enough glitter, grace, and drama to rival any soirĂ©e on the Riviera. Paris: Elegance, Et VoilĂ ! First stop, the City of Lights, where the OpĂ©ra Garnier, that grand architectural jewel, housed a revival of "La BayadĂšre" by the Paris Opera Ballet. A triumph, my dears! I've seen this majestic masterpiece many times, but never have I witnessed such breathtaking artistry and technical precision. The corps de ballet was a vision of perfectly aligned lines, the famous Kingdom of the Shades sequence simply magical. The ethereal lightness of the dancers in white, like so many white doves, was almost beyond belief. And Natalia Osipova - ah, Natalia, her artistry and technical virtuosity took my breath away. Her captivating performance as Nikiya - it simply redefined the word 'divine.' London: From Classic to Contemporary On to London, where the Royal Ballet held court, and boy did they! First up was the iconic "Swan Lake". It was the exquisite storytelling that really impressed me, that heart-wrenching interplay between love and betrayal, beautifully choreographed and brought to life by an ensemble at the peak of their powers. Then came the real treat, "Woolf Works", a new work by Wayne McGregor, inspired by Virginia Woolf’s captivating life and literary brilliance. It’s innovative, emotionally powerful, and beautifully challenging. I admit, it was quite daring, this modern twist on classical ballet, yet incredibly thought-provoking. New York: Where The Dance World Revolves Naturally, a trip to New York wasn't complete without a visit to the legendary Lincoln Center. This time, the American Ballet Theatre treated us to an intoxicating mix of traditional and contemporary works. “Giselle" brought tears to my eyes, a classic for a reason! The passion and emotion pouring from the stage, especially during the tragic and haunting final moments, was almost palpable. Then came the exciting premiere of “The Unfolding”, by the wonderfully talented choreographer, Jessica Lang. Her use of natural movement, interspersed with explosive, dynamic elements, made for a thrilling and captivating spectacle. Tokyo: East Meets West Next up, a sojourn to Tokyo, a city bursting with creative energy. There I witnessed an enchanting fusion of Eastern and Western ballet at the Tokyo Ballet’s performance of “La Sylphide”. This is where tradition takes a thrilling new turn! The delicate elegance and ethereal lightness of the classical steps were expertly paired with Japanese aesthetics, resulting in a captivating spectacle. This ballet was not a mere reinterpretation, but a fresh expression of universal emotions through dance. Moscow: The Russian Soul And, finally, my dear, I couldn't resist a trip to the Bolshoi Theatre, where the legendary Bolshoi Ballet reigns. As expected, I was swept away by the raw power, precision, and emotion of "Don Quixote" - an iconic classic that never fails to deliver. The virtuosity of the dancers, the vibrant energy, the drama unfolding before my very eyes – a spectacle that truly captivated! It's a reminder of the enduring legacy of classical ballet and the artistic spirit that continues to burn bright. The Bolshoi remains an undeniable testament to the brilliance of Russian ballet. And Beyond... This global whirl has provided a thrilling peek into the ever-evolving world of ballet. Whether it’s the grandeur of classical ballets, the innovative energy of modern choreography, or the magical fusion of Eastern and Western influences, one thing is for certain – ballet continues to enchant, enthrall, and inspire. The power of ballet, that blend of grace and athleticism, music and narrative, remains a compelling force that captivates and unites us all, regardless of age, background or nationality. Now, as the May sunshine beckons, I can only anticipate what balletic wonders the upcoming months will bring. I suggest, my dear, you join me for the journey, lose yourself in the artistry of movement, and savor every elegant pirouette. The world of ballet awaits! Your Beloved Ballerina, Lavinia
