A Dance-Filled Spring

Darling, isn't it just divine that we are already well into April? The daffodils are out, the birds are singing, and I must admit, after a rather splendid New York Fashion Week (did you see the Valentino!), I am ready to see some exquisitely crafted steps. With the spring air filled with such promise, it feels absolutely right to discuss some of the spectacular ballet offerings in the world right now.

Of course, I couldn't begin anywhere else but the *Royal Opera House*, darling. Now, don't give me that look! While they may be on the "grand" side sometimes, you simply can't beat the sheer *history* and *tradition* they carry. This month, their rendition of *Swan Lake* with the fabulous Maria Kovros in the lead was just enchanting. Those arabesques? A breath away from heaven, my dears! She made the *black swan* feel so intensely raw and emotional; I could practically hear her tears falling onto the stage! Honestly, darling, her performance was pure art.

A real highlight for me, however, was *La Bayadere* at the *Mariinsky Theatre*. Talk about breathtaking! Those corps de ballet scenes are just sensational, the movement a true *tour de force*. I particularly enjoyed the *Kingdom of the Shades* โ€“ the lighting and atmosphere, divine. They captured the ethereal quality perfectly! You really felt like you were transported to another world. It is so special to see this particular ballet done so exquisitely โ€“ it was practically *flawless*. I did hear, though, that the star dancer, Olga Smirnova, has moved back to Moscow โ€“ perhaps I shall see her perform on Russian shores this summer.

While in St. Petersburg, a quick trip to the *Mikhailovsky Theatre* for *Giselle* was an absolute delight. That stage is so intimate โ€“ it gives you a truly close connection to the performance. And speaking of close connections, the passion in the choreography and the captivating performances in the duet made for a truly moving spectacle. Honestly, darling, one couldn't help but shed a tear. It felt as though the heartbreak was *mine* to feel! The costume design was exquisite โ€“ just a hint of Victorian romance with some subtle splashes of pastel lilac. Simply stunning. And the pointe work from Natalia Osipova... truly breathtaking.

A change of scene took me to the *Dutch National Ballet*, who presented *The Sleeping Beauty* in Amsterdam. And let me tell you, they do *classic* very well! This wasn't your typical fluffy-skirted version; this production felt edgy, even a bit rebellious. I really liked that! The dancing was beautifully athletic, almost *athletic* in its beauty โ€“ a powerful display of strength and agility. It had a wonderful sense of storytelling, so playful, and so sophisticated. The choreography in the finale? Simply dazzling, just *dazzling*. You really felt the transformation โ€“ from the quietude of the opening scenes to the energetic exuberance at the end. Quite the whirlwind of emotions, darling, quite the whirlwind!

Oh, darling, we absolutely must speak of *Alvin Ailey*. If you haven't experienced one of their performances, do not despair, as *Ailey II* will soon grace our stages with their own stunning interpretations of modern ballet and jazz! But let's return to the mothership. A *must-see* this month, in a nod to their iconic lineage, is their program titled, "Revelations". Honestly, dear, I simply felt chills as the piece built to its powerful climax. This is what dance *should* feel like โ€“ a deep and powerful expression of life's highs and lows, through exquisite technique and a touch of magic. And don't even get me started on the costumes... those flowing silhouettes! Pure poetry in motion! I always end a trip to an *Ailey* show feeling as though I have been blessed by a heavenly grace. A bit *saccharine*, you may say, but the truth is, I simply cannot be objective. Their productions truly move my soul. If there's a God, I truly believe dance was sent down by a heavenly decree!

While the major companies in the world are undoubtedly doing wonderful things, my dear, it would be wrong not to mention the emerging stars, those talented individuals breaking boundaries. Remember how we swooned over those lovely Bolshoi dancers who defected last year, well they have been keeping busy, have they not! Alina Somova is now dancing for *Ballet Zurich*, a wonderful company known for their more modern outlook. You could hear the excitement in the audience the other night at the premiere of her performance in a brand new piece called *Symphony of Stars* . You could almost feel the *hope* and *passion* in the air! Darling, we were simply breathless at the stage lights' subtle change as Alina performed, bringing this stunning new ballet piece to life.

Oh, you absolutely *must* also be following **Diana Vishneva** on Instagram, right? I simply adore this woman's elegant, slightly unconventional style. This queen of contemporary ballet was captivating recently in *The Mirror* at the *Tchaikovsky Concert Hall* in Moscow. If you can get tickets to the gala in Moscow at the end of May, you will be truly delighted by the work of this fantastic talent. The costumes for *The Mirror*, darling, just *divine*, with long flowing tulle. They almost seemed to blur with her every step. It is something that cannot truly be experienced unless seen!

With these incredible opportunities to be awash in beauty, creativity, and *emotion* this spring, how can we even contemplate staying away from the theatre, my darlings? Don't be afraid to stray from your usual routine. There are many ballet gems out there, so embrace the possibilities! You never know when you're going to encounter an unforgettable masterpiece, a stunning performance, or a breathtaking dancer โ€“ something that may make your *heart skip a beat* and leave you mesmerized. But whatever you decide, darling, have a beautiful and inspirational spring! And do remember to share any particularly stunning performances that you find. I'm always on the hunt for a *new discovery*, after all!
