#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: February 28th 1832 - A Little Glimpse of Glamour! 🩰💖

Hello my lovely Tutu Twirlers! Welcome back to another instalment of #TutuTuesday! It's me, Emma, your very own time travelling tutu aficionado, and today I'm waltzing back to February 28th, 1832, to see what was happening in the wonderful world of dance. This week we're exploring a date that holds a special place in my heart. You know why? Well, today, February 28th, 1832, my dear readers drumroll … a brand new dance called La Sylphide was premiered in Paris. Ah...the magic of ballet in Paris! It truly doesn't get more elegant.

Now, I know what you’re thinking – “La Sylphide, Emma? Isn’t that…well, rather old?”. Oh my darlings! We have so much to thank this little gem for. You see, La Sylphide completely changed the world of ballet. It was like a bright, beautiful pink feather boa landing on the stuffy world of classical dance and injecting a wave of delicate and fluttery charm!

Can you believe, dear friends, before La Sylphide, dancers didn't wear the tutus we adore today? No, they danced in cumbersome, ankle-length skirts that might've looked impressive standing still, but for the graceful moves, leaps, and pirouettes we associate with ballet today? They just wouldn't do! Think of a little flower struggling in a muddy field… now picture a beautiful flower swaying gracefully in a sun-drenched garden. That's the difference between the old, restricted skirts and the freeing ballet tutus.

The tutu for La Sylphide, my friends, was made of a soft, dreamy white gauze, fluttering around the legs like wispy smoke. They were called ‘Romantic’ tutus, and it was like the perfect touch of feminine sweetness! I almost feel a bit jealous of the dancers who first graced the stage in these tutus – I dream of being in the Paris opera house as they danced around in such ethereal elegance!

Speaking of Paris… oh, darling Paris, the epitome of style and elegance! If I wasn't busy hopping around time periods in my sparkly pink tutus, I’d be whisking off to Paris on the next train. I simply cannot get enough of those cobblestone streets, charming cafés, and…well, *more tutus, obviously!* Imagine, if you will, the world's best fashionistas waltzing around in elegant tutus, from the beautiful theatres of Paris to the bustling shops… It truly wouldn't be far off! 😉

Don't worry, darlings, even though it's February in 1832, my lovely Tutu Twirlers don't need to miss out on this glamorous Parisian feeling. Just grab yourself a beautiful pink tutu, put on your favourite ballerina music, and imagine you’re swirling across the stage with grace and ease!

I do hope that after our lovely glimpse back in time today, you'll be even more enchanted with tutus than ever before! And don't forget to tell your friends about my #TutuTuesday blog! I want everyone to be a little bit smitten with tutus and all things lovely!

Until next time,

Emma 💖 🩰 💕
