Tutu Tuesday #11: The Tutu’s Humble Beginnings 🩰

Hello my lovely tutu enthusiasts! 🎀 It’s Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink-tutu-wearing, time-travelling ballerina, back with another delightful delve into the world of the iconic tutu! As you all know, my heart belongs to this fabulous garment, and every Tuesday I love sharing its fascinating history with you. So, let’s set our tutus aflutter and step back in time to the 13th of March, 1832! 🕰️

Oh, wouldn’t it be just dreamy to travel back in time and experience this period?! I bet the theatres were bustling with excitement and romance, and the fashion scene was positively buzzing! Think silks, satins, and those wonderful bonnets - imagine! I’ve always been a fan of historical fashion. I actually just travelled back in time and managed to snag a gorgeous vintage lace top at a London vintage shop, and it’s just the most darling piece, it would look incredible under a pink tulle tutu – swoon!

Okay, let's dive back into our #TutuTuesday adventure! Now, picture this, it's the early 1830s, a time when ballerinas, unlike us, wore long, flowing dresses! They were absolutely exquisite, mind you, with layers of silks and frills, but definitely not as nimble for the dazzling steps that would define ballet! And let's be honest, you wouldn't catch them spinning a pirouette in such grand, flowing gowns, now would you?

But all this changed with the arrival of a true visionary: Marie Taglioni! 🤩 Her revolutionary vision saw the rise of the first real tutus! These innovative pieces were much shorter than traditional ballet skirts, featuring airy tulle or net fabrics - truly the very beginning of what would become our iconic garment! And here's a juicy fact for you, my fellow tutu fans - in the beginning, the first "tutu" looked nothing like the airy masterpieces we wear today! It wasn't a full skirt at all but more like a series of flouncy ruffles attached to a waist band. The movement was free, graceful and almost weightless! The first tutus had long, sweeping lines of soft tulle, highlighting the fluidity and beauty of the female form, with movement and expression taking centre stage. Isn't that fascinating? ✨

Imagine how everyone must have felt at the first glimpse of those early tutus. It must have been an incredible revelation for those who were used to seeing only full skirts on ballerinas. The very air around them must have seemed different as the ballerinas spun, twirled and floated effortlessly across the stage. It’s enough to make any tutu enthusiast’s heart flutter, don’t you think?

My fellow tutu lovers, this period was so crucial in our ballet story. The arrival of the first tutu signalled a real shift, the evolution of ballet. We are in the midst of a transformation where the graceful beauty of the dancer takes centre stage, showcasing their body and artistry through expressive movements. And all of this thanks to those revolutionary tutus! 👏

While the 13th March, 1832 doesn't mark a specific historical ballet moment, it’s a reminder that this period saw a movement brewing – the very beginnings of the tutu revolution! This year marked a momentous occasion: a performance by Taglioni as La Sylphide in a short, tutu-like skirt – this event sparked a ballet movement! Taglioni's graceful style, with her short skirt allowing her more fluidity, created a whole new sense of femininity and artistry within ballet. And let’s not forget, she brought with her the sheer joy and poetry that defined the romantic era. The theatre must have been full of excitement for the unveiling of this new design! 🤩 Can you imagine witnessing that with your own eyes?

It’s safe to say that this was truly the beginning of a beautiful journey, with many new developments in tutus to come! My heart fills with joy every time I look back on this fascinating history of tutus, their development and the role they have played in ballet! Remember my dear readers, it’s important to remember how our fashion, including our tutu, reflects its time! 💕 Each decade brought with it its own distinct aesthetic.

And just like ballet, the tutu's beauty goes beyond just looking great. It's a symbol of femininity, grace, and the power of movement. Every stitch tells a story of creative artistry, elegance, and captivating movement. My darling readers, do I ever inspire you to slip into your tutu and create your own story!

Well my little tutu lovers, it's time to wind this post up and go get a cheeky piece of Victoria sponge from my favourite bakery. But don't worry, we’ll continue this journey of Tutu Tuesdays. Let’s all twirl with delight and celebrate the beauty of tutus. Until next Tuesday, let’s keep our ballet slippers dancing and our tutu dreams swirling! 💖

Oh, and one last thought: what could be more magical than spreading joy through a pink tutu? Imagine the wonderful smiles and giggles it could bring to those who see us. After all, I'm on a mission to get the world wearing pink tutus! 🤩

Until next time, keep shining! ✨

Emma
