Tutu Tuesday #36: A Glimpse into Ballet's Past, 1832

Bonjour mes chéries! Emma here, your very own pink tutu-clad time traveler, bringing you another slice of history straight from the archives of my fabulous time machine! Today, we're travelling back to the 4th of September, 1832 - just a whisper of time ago compared to my last trip! This was the year when a new era of ballet was beginning to bloom, just like the most beautiful flower!

Remember when I told you about those wonderful Italian ballerinas, the "dancing fairies" who introduced us to the lighter, airier pointe shoes? Well, that graceful dance style continued to capture the hearts of all of Paris. You could feel it in the air, in the music, in the way everyone dressed!

Today we'll delve into a time when romanticism was sweeping through all aspects of life. Just like fashion reflected a shift towards the delicate, flowing gowns and romantic drapery, the stage, too, began embracing this sentiment. Gone were the elaborate, heavy costumes of the past - now the emphasis was on lightness and freedom of movement!

Imagine this: a delicate silk dress, with a cloud of tulle that gently billows out at the bottom - a silhouette as elegant and airy as a ballerina's own jump! Imagine the soft pastel colors and delicate embroideries - truly an ethereal vision!

Yes, dear friends, this is where we first begin to see the origins of what we now consider a "tutu"! This new era in ballet saw the birth of the romantic tutu, a shorter, more revealing, single-layer skirt that offered unparalleled freedom for the ballerinas to dance en pointe. The focus was now on graceful lines, delicate movements, and the beauty of the dancers' form.

Picture the shimmering stage, the music rising to a crescendo, and a ballerina floating on air in her ethereal, pastel pink tutu... Honestly, I don't think it gets much more magical than that! This beautiful movement was taking the Parisian scene by storm, so imagine how ecstatic everyone was to hear that the lovely Maria Taglioni was to grace the stage on this very date!

Maria Taglioni was truly a legend, darling! Imagine her, with her exquisitely delicate features and her ethereal grace, performing the celebrated La Sylphide ballet! The Parisian theatre would have been filled with gasps of wonder, the audience enraptured by her delicate movements and stunning grace.

I could tell you all about Maria Taglioni and La Sylphide - that wonderful, mysterious tale of a Scottish forest sprite - but that's a story for another time, dear friends. Remember though, it was during this era that tutus, the lovely pink tutu you all know and love, began to develop into the graceful garments that enchant us on stage even today!

Let me paint you a picture, a whirlwind of delight! In my little pink tutu, I'd have waltzed with the Parisians through their elegant avenues, pausing for a sweet éclair at a Parisian patisserie. Later, we'd have visited the most exclusive fabric shops, and just imagine, I would have probably picked up a few yards of fine, gossamer tulle - perfect for a little sewing project, wouldn't you agree? Perhaps some lace, a little satin ribbon... Ooh, just imagine the possibilities!

You see, my dears, even though the Parisian fashion scene was a million miles away from our humble Derbyshire, England (where a "tutu" is still only found on a little birdy!), I love how far these ideas spread and took flight. It is a delightful glimpse into a bygone era - one filled with romantic beauty, flowing tulle, and ballerinas gracefully floating across the stage!

I must be off now! I have a wonderful performance tonight in London, with a dazzling new pink tutu I can't wait to wear! I must dash now to pack my vintage trunk. It's always such a treat to return to the stage after a wonderful day of time-travelling. But until next week's adventures, do remember, dear friends, wear pink and never stop dancing!

Bisous,

Emma
