#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: The Spark of a Revolution! (Post 67)
Bonjour mes amies! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, dedicated to all things tutus. Today, as always, we’re taking a trip through history, delving into the fascinating evolution of this iconic piece of dancewear.
My pink tutu is sparkling extra brightly this Tuesday, as we’re venturing back to 9th April, 1833, a date that might just hold the very first spark of the tutu revolution!
Now, my lovely readers, you might be wondering, “Emma, darling, you’re talking about a ballet costume, so why are we looking so far back in history?" Well, the truth is, before 1830, ballerinas were, ahem, a bit...well, less glamorous! They waltzed around the stage in voluminous skirts, their legs shrouded in fabric, barely visible to the audience. Imagine the disappointment!
But alas, change was in the air, and a woman named Marie Taglioni was about to step onto the scene and make waves!
The Year of the Revolutionary Ballerina
Marie Taglioni, a vision in white, was one of the first ballerinas to truly embrace lightness and movement. Her performance of "La Sylphide", first staged on 12th March 1832, captivated audiences, igniting a revolution in dance attire.
Taglioni wore a simple tutu-like garment, so short it was revolutionary at the time. The audience was in awe! They finally got a clear glimpse of the graceful artistry of a ballerina’s feet, and the flowing movement of her limbs. The era of the "big skirts" was officially over!
A New Era of Glamour: Embracing the Tulle
And with the evolution of dancewear, came the evolution of a fashion icon. The "tutu", as we know it, was starting to take its true form! This garment of elegance and grace started to play with more volume, using fine tulle, and more daring silhouettes.
Now, my dear readers, can you imagine dancing with such restricted movement? It makes my pink tutu twirl a little bit faster, knowing that the ladies of the past had to endure so much just to express themselves!
But we must admire the fortitude of these ballerinas. Their hard work, their daring choice to move away from tradition, created a foundation for the incredible beauty we experience in ballet today. Their efforts opened up a new world for ballerinas and, indeed, for dance as a whole.
Time Travel Inspiration
Last week I journeyed to Vienna to watch a breathtaking performance of Swan Lake. The elegance and grace of the ballerinas reminded me of those courageous dancers of the past, and how they made ballet what it is today! The tulle was simply magnificent, and I must admit, it gave me a good deal of inspiration for my own pink tutu creations.
And as for the costumes - those magnificent swans? They truly captured the grace and vulnerability of these amazing creatures, all whilst being entirely enchanting, romantic, and inspiring.
My Tutu Tuesday Treat
On my return journey back to Derbyshire, I couldn’t resist a pitstop in London to shop for tulle! My fingers itched to touch the soft material, and I imagined myself in a delicate pink tutu, floating on the stage. My little corner of my flat now has several spools of the softest pink tulle. My latest creation, my pink "La Sylphide" inspired tutu, will debut next week at a local ballet class.
And of course, you dear readers will be the first to know the results! I have even sourced a beautiful set of pale pink ballet shoes for the occasion.
As the tutu is such a classic element in ballet costumes, you could say I was a little smitten with its history! I found out so many incredible facts about its origins and the women who started the evolution of the tutu as we know it! I can’t wait to learn more, and you know me, I’ll be back next Tuesday with another blast from the past!
Until next time, keep those pink tutus twirling!
P.S. And a Happy 9th April! As we journey back to this day, don't forget to appreciate the little details in life, those that bring a smile to our faces and a twirl to our feet. Embrace the beauty in everyday things, like a perfectly crafted cup of tea, or the sound of birds chirping in the morning!
