#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History – October 1st, 1833 – A Whirl Through Time!
Hello, darlings! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet where we delve into the wondrous world of ballet tutus! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, here with another #TutuTuesday post – number 92, if you can believe it! I'm absolutely positively thrilled you've joined me today.
Now, grab yourselves a cuppa, put your feet up and let's whisk back to 1st October 1833 for a bit of history! Oh, and a little whimsy, because wouldn't a tutu blog be dull without it?
Remember to subscribe to my blog, www.pink-tutu.com and follow my instagram for @pinktutuemma, for daily updates of course! You know how I adore a bit of tutus-tastic news!
This week I am feeling quite adventurous and rather peckish. In fact, I've just been shopping at Fortnum & Mason on Piccadilly, darling! They really do have the most splendid teacakes there, if I do say so myself. It makes me feel so utterly fabulous to be in London and experience all the bustle and excitement.
Now, darling, we can't be discussing London without taking a gander at The Royal Opera House, known in those days as The Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. My, what a splendid spectacle it is! Imagine my delight – on this very date in 1833, the Royal Opera House hosted Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Imagine the glorious melodies, the talented singers, the fabulous costumes! A real treat for the senses. I just can't help but imagine myself onstage, twirling in a cloud of tulle, in my perfect pink tutu! Oh, how I wish I could have been there to enjoy the night.
But back to tutus – you lovely lot deserve some proper tutu-licious knowledge! You see, in 1833, those magical tutus that we know and adore so much today? They weren't quite fully developed! It's rather fascinating to know, actually, the progression of this delightful dancewear. We can thank La Sylphide, choreographed in 1832, for paving the way for what we consider the "classic" tutu. But back then? Think flowing skirts, perhaps even some gathered fabric and ribbons – a far cry from the majestic, poofy and perfectly pink tutus we adore today, darlings!
Think of it this way: just like my own style has evolved over the years, so has the tutu. And with every performance, with every change, the tutu gets more and more magical, and more and more…well…pink! After all, we do like to make a statement, don't we?
Just think, if those dancers in 1833 could have seen me strutting through time in my whimsical, twirly pink tutu, they'd probably be speechless! Oh, my darlings, don't you worry. The pink revolution is underway and I'm bringing it to 1833 as we speak. It's time for the tutus of today to be as fabulous as they can be! And we will take a whirlwind tour of the history to bring the future into the present – one fabulous pink tutu at a time!
So, next week, let’s set our sights on 1834 – and who knows what surprises the wonderful world of tutus holds for us then? Now, do go on, darling! You know I love a good comment or question. Leave me a little note – let’s make this ballet history a conversation!
