#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1834-05-06!

Post Number 123

Hello darlings! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet where pink tutus reign supreme! Today, we’re journeying back in time to the 6th of May, 1834, a date filled with such fashion-forward charm!

You know, sometimes, time travel can be a bit... well, let's just say it can take some careful planning. Finding a place where tutus are as celebrated as they are in the present day can be a real challenge! Thankfully, with my love of ballet as my guiding light, I stumbled upon a lovely little Parisian theatre last week, brimming with life and laughter.

Now, 1834 was a very special time for ballet. You see, my darlings, the classic tutu, the one we know and adore, hadn't quite found its true form yet. Instead, dancers were gracing the stage in beautiful, flowing costumes. Imagine, layers and layers of beautiful silk, with long, dramatic sleeves that cascaded like a waterfall as they pirouetted. It was an age of elegance and fluidity, just waiting for a burst of colour!

Speaking of colour, can we just talk about pink for a moment? This exquisite shade of blush was just starting to blossom in the world of fashion, and, oh my, how it took my breath away! Just imagine those cascading silks, not in your usual boring white or ivory, but in a gentle pink - a truly mesmerizing vision!

While there weren't many pink tutus, there was an explosion of vibrant colours in the world of theatre! I discovered the most magnificent costumes, adorned with sparkling beads, feathers, and shimmering sequins, in every shade of the rainbow! You see, back then, costume was a way to tell a story, a way to bring a character to life, a way to truly transport the audience to a magical land!

Now, a special date like the 6th of May couldn’t possibly pass by without some truly spectacular entertainment, could it? Well, as I happened to be in Paris, I popped over to the Theatre de l'Opera! Can you imagine? My darling, a beautiful night out, a live orchestra playing some of the most enchanting music, and dancers showcasing their artistry with the most exquisite costumes! I tell you, my fellow Tutu-lovers, it was a dream come true!

Of course, no trip to Paris would be complete without some shopping, wouldn’t you say? Now, there was no TopShop or ASOS back then, mind you! But, imagine strolling through the boulevards, finding hidden gems in vintage boutiques, breathing in the scent of rich fabrics, and admiring intricate designs... Such an intoxicating experience, my dears!

As my trip drew to a close, I left Paris filled with inspiration. The experience reminded me that even in a world where the tutu hadn't quite found its place, there was beauty everywhere you looked! This was the birth of an era that would ultimately embrace the tutu as we know it, a testament to the evolution of dance and the enduring power of a vibrant pink!

Speaking of vibrant pink, I can't wait to see you all again next Tuesday, my lovely Tutu Tribe, when we explore yet another fascinating chapter in our favourite dance accessory's history.

Until then, stay fabulous and remember - life is best enjoyed in a pink tutu!

Much love, Emma xxx
