#TutuTuesday: A Blast From The Past - 19th Century Fashion!

Hello my darling dears!

It's your favourite Tutu-obsessed time-travelling blogger, Emma, back with another instalment of #TutuTuesday! I hope you’re all feeling positively fabulous in your fabulous pink tutus this week. As always, my mission is to bring you the best and most exciting insights into the history of our beloved ballerina uniform: the tutu!

This week, I'm taking us back to the year 1834! Can you believe it? It feels like a lifetime ago. So hop on board the fabulous express train of time and join me for a whirl back to the glorious age of romanticism and the emergence of ballet as we know it!

August 19th, 1834 was a day just like any other – except in the grand theatre of Paris, where ballet was truly blossoming.

Oh, my dears! Can you imagine the absolute delight of attending a ballet show back then? Imagine the ornate costumes, the grand stage, the gaslights illuminating the dancers’ every movement – simply magical!

Now, you're probably thinking "Emma, what were tutus like in the 1830s?" Well, my lovelies, they were a far cry from the frothy masterpieces we wear today!

Think long, flowing skirts, not the short and bouncy style we know and adore. They were known as "tutu à la Polonaise," featuring elaborate designs, full layers, and long, cascading ruffles that made the dancers look like ethereal beings swirling around the stage. Imagine a ballet dancer from this time as a dainty, graceful flower.

This was a period when tutus began to evolve into something truly spectacular! Dancers needed freedom of movement, and so the design shifted from restrictive floor-length garments to something more form-fitting.

Can you imagine, darlings? Think of the revolution this represented!

The tutu in 1834 was an exciting stepping stone in the world of ballet, paving the way for the amazing, daring, and free-spirited designs that are still inspiring us today.

To understand the significance of this, imagine wearing a skirt that goes all the way to your ankles! Talk about restricting your pirouettes and jumps, darling! Ballet wasn't about graceful movement back then; it was more about dramatic poses and extravagant costumes. The new styles ushered in a new era where dancers could truly express their movements and unleash the artistry within!

It’s moments like these that show us just how important progress is! Fashion evolves, dance evolves, and tutus continue to amaze us with their elegance and history.

So let's raise our pink tutus in appreciation for those fearless pioneers of dance who helped shape the history of the tutu!

What would we be wearing without their vision?

Stay tuned next Tuesday, darling dears, as I whisk you back to another fabulous era in the history of our beloved tutu!
