#TutuTuesday: A Peek Into the Past - 1834!

Hello darlings! It's your favourite tutu-loving time traveller, Emma, here with a brand new post for your weekly dose of ballet history. Today we're jetting back to 1834 - buckle your metaphorical ballet slippers, because we're heading to Paris! I must say, this city never disappoints. So many wonderful cafes, and oh, the fashion!

Today is November 18th, 1834, and we're on a journey back to the golden era of Romantic ballet. That's right, before the invention of the real tutu, our ballerinas were gliding across the stage in elegant gowns that swirled and swished like graceful clouds. Imagine a dancer in a full-length, floor-sweeping dress - all ethereal silks and romantic ruffles! Quite the picture, eh?

It's funny, isn't it, that we all picture a ballerina in a tutu these days. But it was in this era that they began experimenting with skirts and hemlines, trying to create something that would show off their incredible skill and fluidity. Imagine, my dears, how tricky it must have been to leap and pirouette in all that fabric!

This period saw the rise of the famous Marie Taglioni, an ethereal figure of grace and poise, a dancer so adored she practically single-handedly set the trends for Romantic ballet! And you know, she wore those floor-length gowns - but just imagine if she’d had a beautiful, flowing, pink tutu to whirl about in!

It makes me wish we could hop back in time and have a tea party with her, discuss fashion and life and, of course, all things ballet!

Anyway, this was just a peek into a time before the iconic tutus that we all adore, my darlings! This Tuesday has got me reminiscing and I can't wait to see what incredible outfits tomorrow will bring - let's hope it's a bit more pink than today's grey skies! Until then, be sure to subscribe and keep up with all my future travels. And don't forget, every day is a perfect day for a twirl in a tutu!

Yours truly,

Emma

P.S. This is post number 151 on my ballet tutu history blog. Isn't that exciting?! It’s taken me a good long while to travel around and see everything and now, this website is one of my very favourite things about my travels. Let’s just say, being a blogger is quite the passion project. I’d be so lost without my travels, my shows, and all you lovelies. Do check out www.pink-tutu.com. Maybe, you will want to contribute a post someday.
