#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History, 1835-06-16

Dearest readers!

Welcome back to another enchanting #TutuTuesday! It's your girl Emma here, whisking you back in time with a whirlwind of tulle and romance – to the year 1835, to be precise! I can hardly believe it, but I'm on my 181st #TutuTuesday post already!

Where to begin? Well, darlings, on June 16th, 1835, life was just brimming with elegance and refinement. London was abuzz with news of the latest fashions and, naturally, the theatre was the centre of all things fabulous. And wouldn't you know it, the ballet world was seeing some delightful changes!

Now, I know what you're thinking, dear reader, “tutues?!”, "What about all those fancy hoop skirts and puffed sleeves?!" (They are rather dashing, if you ask me). But allow me to set the record straight: The ballet, darling, it's the cradle of tulle!

So, back in 1835, our leading ballerinas weren’t swirling about in the flowing skirts we’d imagine. Nope, they were showing off their long, lovely limbs in a whole new way! The graceful Maria Taglioni was the absolute queen of the ballet, and she had the audacity to debut what we now know as the "Romantic Tutu"!

Imagine a light and airy skirt, just about the knees. Think floating petals, darling! With the delicate tulle, all that flowing fabric could accentuate a dancer’s every movement. You wouldn't believe how much prettier their movements looked. And can we talk about the graceful swirling? Simply captivating!

That lightness, that airiness? That was revolutionary for its time. And it wouldn't be long until every lady in London and Paris was trying to mimic that style in one way or another!

Honestly, the ballet really revolutionised women's fashion in such a charming and dramatic way. You simply can't argue with the magic of a flowing tutu. And with Maria Taglioni showing off such poise and skill, it set a precedent that carried for years. And let’s be honest, the dramatic flair and beauty of a tulle tutu simply has no competition.

Now, tell me, dearies, have any of you caught a ballet performance recently? Don't you just adore the artistry and skill those dancers have? I’ve been fortunate to catch a few shows recently. My favourite performance of all time? “The Sleeping Beauty” last week! The ballet company here in Derbyshire was outstanding, with an utterly splendid wardrobe – including, you guessed it, gorgeous, flowing tutus. The pink one with the sequined flowers took my breath away, a veritable dream. Oh, how I wish I could fit all of those exquisite costumes into my suitcase! Sighs wistfully

As for myself, well, I’m currently travelling in style aboard the London Express, and my trusty pink tutu is nestled in its case, safely waiting to be worn at the next performance I'm attending!

I’ll tell you what, I just have to go and find myself some tea. After all, every true ballet fan must have a spot of tea on hand for the occasion!

Remember, darling, every day is a new opportunity to celebrate life, wear a beautiful tutu and get your pose on.

Until next week!

With love and twirls,

Emma
