#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - Post 183!

Bonjour, mes chers danseurs and tutu enthusiasts! It's Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina, ready to whisk you away on another whirlwind journey through ballet history! Today, we're stepping back in time to 30th June 1835. Fancy a spot of tea and a chat? I've got my travel trunk full of fashion secrets and historical gossip, just for you!

Paris, 1835 - Oh là là!

Paris, the city of lights, romance, and of course, the Ballet! This is where the story really begins for us tutu-lovers, you see. Imagine yourself walking down the streets, the cobblestones rumbling under your feet, the aroma of fresh bread and pastries tickling your nose, and all around, the gentle whispers of artistic revolution. We're on the cusp of something fabulous, dear friends.

The 1830s were a time of incredible change, not just for the world, but for ballet itself! It's here we see the emergence of what we now recognise as the tutu, and let's face it, it's a real game-changer. Gone are the long, cumbersome skirts that hindered movement and grace!

A Little History Lesson with a Touch of Glitter

In the years leading up to 1835, ballerinas were struggling with impractical, flowing skirts. It was tough to even get a good leap in them, let alone do a fouetté! Luckily, one extraordinary woman had a groundbreaking idea - Marie Taglioni.

This gorgeous, gifted dancer (just like me!) decided to do away with all the fabric, revealing something light, airy and perfectly suited for pirouettes. Can you imagine? Ballet became a spectacle of airy elegance and effortless movement, thanks to the revolutionary 'tutu'. This groundbreaking change set the scene for the incredible development of the tutu over the next century.

Oh, The Costumes! The Elegance!

In 1835, the tutu was still quite short and was known as the "Romantic Tutu". You can imagine, a single layer of tulle, flowing gently with every leap. A vision of utter beauty, darling! The tutus at this time were not just practical, they were symbolic. They represented liberation, beauty and a touch of the ethereal. Talk about dramatic, darling!

Think flowing tulle in shades of pale peach, creamy white, or baby blue, with perhaps a tiny touch of blush pink here and there. You know I can't resist the pink, mes amis! This era saw a flourish of decorative embroidery, a touch of shimmering sequins, and some very intricate, elegant floral details - a true ode to romance and femininity.

Ballet: A Celebration of Grace & Feminine Strength

What really captured everyone's imagination back then wasn't just the tutu, but what it enabled. Ballerinas became a vision of lightness and grace, able to move with a freedom previously unseen. Just like a beautiful butterfly, soaring through the air! Imagine the buzz when Taglioni, or one of the other fabulous ballerinas of the time, took the stage, defying gravity with a grand jeté or a graceful pirouette!

It's important to remember that ballet, even back in 1835, was far from just about graceful pirouettes and perfect leaps. It was also a powerful display of athleticism and artistic expression. Imagine the sheer talent, dedication and strength required to even contemplate performing on stage like those glorious ballerinas. And for us, as ballet fans, it was an explosion of visual beauty, a dazzling feast for the eyes, that truly made history!

So, what was going on on June 30th, 1835?

On this day, let’s have a little glimpse into the theatrical world of Paris. 1835 marked a significant year for Parisian theatre, including the premiere of some stunning ballet pieces!
