#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 13th October, 1835

Post No. 198: A Whirl Through History

Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, your weekly dose of all things tutu-tastic. Today, as the crisp October air nips at my toes and the leaves begin to turn, I'm whisked away to a most exciting time - 13th October, 1835!

Now, I may have had my fair share of trips through time, but nothing quite compares to the magic of this era. Picture it: I've just hopped off a train from my Derbyshire home, my pink tutu billowing slightly from the carriage, and I'm practically bursting to share my adventures!

First stop? Paris! Yes, the City of Lights. And as any seasoned fashionista knows, this is where tutu-love truly blossomed. Think Parisian boudoirs, the shimmer of chandeliers, and the delicate whispers of silk. Ah, it's enough to make a girl giddy!

The Birth of the Ballerina’s Swan Song

So, what's happening on the 13th of October, 1835? Well, ladies and gentlemen, history is about to be made on stage. We’re whisked to the Parisian Opera House, where Marie Taglioni, the epitome of elegance and grace, is about to make her grand debut in a performance of La Sylphide.

Remember this name! Taglioni is the queen of tutus - she literally defined the look of the ballerina, revolutionizing dance fashion with her light, diaphanous tulle skirts. This wasn't the bulky, frilly confection of days gone by - Taglioni's tulle is delicate, it moves with her, whispers secrets in the wind!

Think ethereal grace, airy lightness, and, of course, a perfect cascade of frills that allows every twirl and pirouette to be breathtaking. This, my darlings, is the ballet tutu's moment in history - the defining image that remains ingrained in our minds to this very day!

Taking a Peek Behind the Scenes

But let’s take a glimpse beyond the stage for a moment! The magic doesn't stop there. The world of fashion is ablaze with colour, exquisite lace, and the finest silks. Parisian ateliers are teeming with dressmakers and seamstresses, crafting wonders that make even a seasoned time-traveller like myself swoon! And I’ve been to some fashion shows. This one would take my breath away.

Ladies are rocking their tutus – well, not literally. Tulle skirts have begun to sneak their way into everyday wardrobes - just think a lacy layer over your favourite ballgown, or cascading around your ankles like a symphony in pink! It's the ultimate feminine touch. But I always hope one day all ladies will be wearing a tutu, like a symbol of a new era, of empowered fashion.

A Whirlwind of Ballet and Style

And, just like a perfectly executed pirouette, the ballet scene is about to sweep the world! Every night, the grand theaters of Paris, London, and Vienna are packed with excited audiences ready to witness the magic. Imagine the thrill!

Think of the orchestra’s beautiful melodies as they rise like smoke from the stage, carrying the scent of jasmine and the faintest hint of candlelight. The dancers – oh, how they dance! Their bodies move with a freedom that captivates every soul in the audience, every turn and jump whispering secrets of elegance and poise.

For a young girl like myself (back in the good old days of the present, when we are in a pre-war time!) these ballets are the spark of a passion for life, for performance, for dance!

A Whirl of Ideas:

To celebrate this glorious era and my journey through time, I have a few fun ideas for you to add a touch of 1835 to your own lives.

  1. Embrace the Tulle: Think beyond the ballet and add a touch of airy elegance to your own wardrobe. Layer a tulle skirt over your favourite outfit, and embrace the romantic charm. Go full on "Romantic period" style – the women are stunning, with dresses with large, round, billowing sleeves with frills or lace, fitted at the waist. Don't forget a flower in your hair – be a romantic lady like they were back then!

  2. Dance Your Heart Out: Find a ballet class and join the graceful whirl. It's never too late to tap into the magic of movement and discover the elegance within. It's truly an enchanting world to explore!

  3. Train Travels and Fancy Teas: Treat yourself to a romantic afternoon tea with a friend and pretend you're heading to a ballet performance, complete with a whimsical afternoon gown and maybe a tiny, delicate tulle skirt beneath.

And of course, for all you fashionable tutu fans out there, I've been scouting the stores and have found the most magnificent tulle skirts. (Links to all these in the post!)

See You Next Week!

My fellow tutu-lovers, this whirlwind journey is only just beginning! Be sure to check in next Tuesday for another delightful dive into ballet history!

Until then, keep dancing and never stop embracing the joy of a good, twirling, feminine ballet tutu!

Love and tutus,
