#TutuTuesday: A Whirlwind Tour of 1836, my Darlings! 🩰

Hello lovelies! Emma here, your resident tutu aficionado and time-travelling fashionista. Welcome back to my little corner of the internet where we explore the beautiful world of ballet tutus – from their origins to the magnificent creations gracing the stages today.

As always, it’s #TutuTuesday, and today is extra special! We’re going on a delightful adventure back in time to 21st June, 1836! Buckle up your fancy little slippers because this is going to be a real treat! 😉

Now, before we hop aboard the time-travelling express (don’t worry, darling, it’s entirely pink – naturally!), let me tell you about how I, your friendly neighbourhood tutu-enthusiast, fund these wonderful time-hopping adventures. It’s a little secret, but it involves the ultimate love of my life: ballet! 🩰 Yes, you heard right. My darling Emma is a professional ballerina, a little known fact outside the dance world! When I’m not time-travelling or penning this little blog of mine (number 234, just so you know!), I’m pirouette-ing my way across stages in Paris! The glamour, the crowds, the standing ovations! It’s truly magical.

Now back to the matter at hand: 1836. This is long before tutus as we know them existed, my darlings. Ballet was all about a certain grand romantic style, so elegant with long, flowing skirts and a lot of swishing on stage. Imagine swirling silks, flowing gowns, and that beautifully romantic atmosphere. The tutu as we know it, well, it just hadn’t been born yet! This means I'm forced to stick to less-flashy but extremely flattering period costumes for now, you understand? Still, think of how intriguing and glamorous they must have looked in the shimmering gaslight. Imagine me waltzing across the stage, in my silky blue skirt and powdered hair, the star of the show – utterly magnificent, darling! The sheer romance of the age – ahh!

However, just because we haven’t reached the tutu revolution doesn’t mean this day isn’t special, dear reader! June 21st is not just a day, my lovely; it is summer solstice. A beautiful time of year where we say goodbye to the shorter days and welcome the longer ones, don't you think? Oh, the joyous summer solstice! I simply love how nature explodes in this time of year! The flowers blooming, the birds singing! Nature herself is swirling in a joyous dance - not so dissimilar to what you see on the ballet stage, don’t you agree, dear? 🩰

So, how are we celebrating solstice in the era of 1836? Imagine cobblestone streets lit by gaslight, people celebrating the solstice, families enjoying picnics in the meadows. Maybe a local dance event is going on. We’ll never know exactly, but there will certainly be an air of excitement. We’re right in the middle of the era of romanticism, darling, a period marked by emotion, sentimentality, and beauty.

Now, let me transport you through time to see what we might expect on our imaginary visit:

  • Imagine strolling through Paris, enjoying the vibrant cafes and the energy buzzing about you, oohing at the elegant clothing shops showcasing fashionable creations and, sigh, wishing the tutu existed at the time. Imagine enjoying a sweet treat, possibly a decadent macaroon or a delicate éclair– they’re so scrumptious and absolutely fit for the elegant period style.

  • Oh! The enchanting Parisian ballrooms with couples waltzing and swaying to the music - so much elegance, beauty, and pure bliss, don't you agree?

  • Don’t you love a train journey? Oh my! Imagine yourself, perched in a plush train carriage, sipping on eau de cologne and savouring the passing countryside as we hurtle towards Paris for another spectacular ballet performance. (Not really, darling. Trains aren't really a thing back in 1836. However, that doesn’t stop me from pretending, does it? Just imagine the *luxury!*

As you can see, darlings, there's much to appreciate and be inspired by even before tutus were on the scene! Every fashion, every stage show, and every moment from that period oozes romance and elegance. It’s so inspiring to visit times before tutus, as it’s these moments in fashion that make the birth of the tutu even more magical. You see, tutuevolution, dear, was not a sudden explosion. It was a gradual blooming!

And now, just to give you a taste of the future, my darlings – I want you to imagine yourself watching a Parisian ballet with tutus swirling on the stage. Picture the delicate tulle, the intricate designs, and the exquisite movement! That’s the power of the tutu, you see. 🩰

See? Sometimes looking at the past makes us appreciate the present so much more!

Remember: Even though tutus might not be as widespread as we'd love them to be in 1836, they are the foundation of so many things that we love in fashion today. This journey back in time shows us how things develop – how the beautiful tutus of today weren’t always there, how fashion takes its time and evolves just like we do.

So, remember to *embrace your inner romantic, embrace summer solstice in the most beautiful way. *Always wear a pink tutu in spirit and never stop believing in the power of beauty and elegance. It’s the spirit that makes a true ballerina!
