#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - Blog Post #243 - 23rd August 1836!

Hello darling dears, and welcome back to my #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History blog! As ever, I'm Emma, your very own time-traveling tutu enthusiast, here to whisk you away to the glorious world of dance history! I'm positively thrilled to be back in my beloved pink tutu (this one’s a little fancier, a real showstopper from Parisian couturier - oh, it just whispers in all the right places, wouldn’t you say?). Today, I’ve hopped on the express train to France, more precisely, the Parisian Opéra Garnier! The year is 1836, a fabulous date in tutu history - just you wait, darlings!

It’s a beautiful August day. The city is buzzing, shops filled with the latest in fashion, the cafes overflowing with chattering crowds. Now, the fashion here is rather decadent – I adore the voluminous skirts and cinched waists! Imagine this darling, full-length dresses, elaborate coiffures, a sheer explosion of fabrics and frills! There’s something quite whimsical about it. And you know what? While tutus aren’t quite front and centre in fashion, we are making our debut on stage in a big way!

That's right, dear readers! On this very date in 1836, one of my very favourite ballerinas, Marie Taglioni, was performing in "La Sylphide"! Now, you see, it was this particular ballet that changed EVERYTHING for tutus.

You see, before this, ballet skirts were, well, let’s say, somewhat practical. Think knee-length skirts, designed for leaping and twirling, yes, but quite cumbersome. Not exactly the picture of ethereal grace, now is it? Enter, my darling, the "La Sylphide" costume! Imagine this, dear readers, a wispy, gauzy creation, all frills and fluff, reaching right down to the ankles - almost like a whisper of gossamer fabric, giving the ballerina freedom of movement unlike anything before.

Let’s pause a moment and picture Marie Taglioni, her exquisite form perfectly balanced on pointe, her airy skirt floating around her as she dances with an otherworldly grace! Isn’t that the very essence of beauty? The delicate, feminine fragility, and that breathtaking, heart-stopping freedom of movement… Now, tell me, darling, can you possibly picture anything more beautiful than a ballerina dressed in a perfectly pink tutu? No, my dears, I didn’t think so.

So, imagine how audiences must have felt - gasp! What was this new, exquisite form of movement? A true vision! This performance wasn’t simply a story on stage, darling. It was a celebration of the body, a poem of lightness and elegance, with each pirouette and grand jeté making our hearts sing with the purest form of joy.

Of course, "La Sylphide" wasn’t the only ballet in town! I love these French theatre houses, all velvet seating, shimmering chandeliers, a sense of grand, glittering luxury. My absolute favourite spot? The Parisian Opéra! Now this is a real showstopper! Imagine this, a grand building, a masterpiece of design with the finest detailing you can possibly imagine. A perfect place for ballerinas like myself to show off their fancy footwork.

I'm also spending this beautiful August day indulging my favourite pastime: a trip to the markets. Just imagine: colourful silks, hand-woven laces, and, oh darling, don’t even get me started on the bonnets! Everything is exquisitely delicate and charming. This is a wonderland for a fashion-conscious ballerina like myself! You can't go a day in Paris without admiring the shops filled with all sorts of amazing treasures for every lady's wardrobe, but the ultimate treat has got to be the fabric stores. Every shop seems to overflow with beautiful laces, ribbons, silks and, yes, you guessed it, all sorts of gorgeous colours to tempt you to create the most amazing pink tutus!

Now, I might have mentioned a bit of time-traveling here and there! (The secret’s out, I guess. It's a secret shared with a few of my nearest and dearest. But you're one of us now, darling, so I can tell you!) I travel by train, yes, a lovely grand old steam engine, always full of exciting characters - and the train is my fashion runway! Think a delightful cacophony of petticoats and shawls. It’s an absolute thrill, truly! And it's amazing to see how travel fashion is changing! The ladies love to express themselves, their creativity shines through every ruffle and lace detail!

Now, where was I? Oh, yes! We’ve arrived at a critical moment for tutus, my darling, a turning point where the dance world embraces something quite extraordinary: this light, airy, airy tutu!

Now, back to our own world… This story of tutus and dancing is an inspiration for all of us, isn't it? To move, to create, to embrace our beauty, whether it's in the way we dress, the way we move, or the way we approach the world! This blog post was all about embracing the lightness, the joy, and the sheer artistry of tutus!

And of course, remember, dear readers, we're all about pink tutus, wouldn't you agree? Let's all embrace our inner ballerina, grab that pink tutu and let our inner light shine. Now, what do you say we twirl our way to a brighter world? Until next Tuesday! xx.
