#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Blast From the Past! ๐ฉฐ
Hello lovely dancers and fashionistas! Welcome back to Pink Tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things pink and tutu-tastic! I'm your resident time-traveling ballerina, Emma, and today, for our #TutuTuesday historical deep dive, we're stepping back in time to September 13th, 1836!
Just imagine, ladies and gents, a world without the magical twirl of the tutu! It's a terrifying thought, isn't it? But before the graceful dance of these exquisite garments, there were layers upon layers of fabric, a world of corsets and petticoats, hardly designed for movement!
(Blog Post #246 - a little fun fact: This is my 246th blog post about tutus, can you believe it? It's so exciting to see how much interest there's been in my #TutuTuesday adventures! Maybe you'll inspire me to keep writing! )
I have to admit, this time-travel trip was rather challenging! It took a bit more planning than usual and some impressive ballet performances in 19th-century London to secure the funds for my trip. I had to get creative with my outfits, trading my usual flamboyant pink tutu for a more demure, less flamboyant Victorian dress. Don't worry, I still found a way to sneak in some tulle in my outfit, a delicate hint of pink tucked underneath the layers.
**(The trains back then were rather rickety, imagine travelling on a steam train with no air conditioning, just a puff of coal smoke filling the carriages! A far cry from the comfort and style of today! )
**(Do you think travelling back in time is cool? Leave your thoughts in the comments below. I would love to know your opinion!)
Let's talk fashion, darling! You see, back in 1836, ballet was evolving. You had the classic styles from the Italian ballets but now, new styles, known as "The Romantic Ballet", were emerging! It's all about elegance and graceful movements, not so much jumps and fouettes - at least, not in this particular moment in history.
The romantic ballerinas didn't even need tutus! In their stead, they wore long, flowing gowns โ think layers upon layers of tulle or silk โ creating a whimsical and almost ethereal look. There was so much material in those gowns! I can only imagine how uncomfortable they were to wear. But then again, when you see the ethereal grace with which these dancers moved, you realise that a little discomfort must have been worth it for this dreamlike aesthetic!
*But where do our tutus fit in to all of this? *
Theyโre a little bit like a magic trick. Just imagine โ all this fabric, this billowing cloud of tulle, is not even part of the main skirt of the dress, but simply an addition โ a separate garment altogether! * Suddenly, you have these layers of light and graceful tulle dancing and swaying to create the most wonderful, fantastical shapes. *Itโs pure magic!
**(My favourite look back then is this graceful and airy style of dance โ the light, floating tutus seem to whisper their movements in a secret language I can only dream of understanding)
(Now letโs talk about this romantic ballet style. Imagine ballets based on fairy tales and the ethereal stories of fantastic creatures, rather than historical accounts or mythological epics! Now this is something worth talking about. Tell me about your favourite fairy tale! Iโll add it to my ever growing collection of favourite storybooks! **)
This is just the beginning of our tutu journey, my dear readers! Next Tuesday, I will be diving deeper into this exciting world of tutus and dance. Remember to keep those questions flowing, and please share this post with all your friends, who love fashion and dancing! **
*P.S. *I will be holding a special Q&A session on Thursday to answer any questions about my time-traveling adventures! It's a bit of a chaotic life โ let me know what you want to know! Until then, keep your eyes open for the magic in life, and embrace the joy of the twirl!
(Have a wonderful week, dear friends, and keep those tutus flowing!)
Emma xx
