#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - June 13th, 1837! 🩰

Greetings, darling tutu enthusiasts! It’s your favourite pink-clad, time-travelling ballerina, Emma, back with another exciting journey into the wonderful world of tutus! Today we’re heading back to June 13th, 1837, to see what kind of ballet tutus were twirling across the stages! 🎉

A Glimpse into History!

It feels like such a glamorous thing to do, popping back through time. This time, I was particularly drawn to this date because it’s the day our beloved Queen Victoria ascended the throne! Talk about a historical moment! You can imagine all the royal balls and opera houses that would have been bursting with life and exquisite fashion. 👑

This is the era of romantic ballet, darling, and tutus were all the rage! You see, just like our modern tutus, they were designed to allow for effortless movement, helping those beautiful ballerinas soar across the stage. But in the 1830s, they were still a bit longer, flowing from waist to ankles and often with lots of tulle and layers, giving a truly romantic, almost ethereal effect.

So how do I know this? Well, besides my incredible time machine (powered by the joy of a grand jeté, of course!), there are wonderful archive pictures, books and journals detailing what those delicate dancers were wearing. They weren’t always pink though, that wasn’t quite so popular until later! The colour back then tended to be cream, white, pale blues, pinks or even shimmering silver.

Imagine yourself onstage, performing with that sort of beautiful fabric swirling around your legs, while a gentleman in elegant breeches and frock coat (ooh, la la!) gazes adoringly at your graceful every move. 🥰

Tutu Trivia!

Did you know that in the 1830s, ballerinas actually had to sew their own tutus?! That's a lot of layers of fabric to manage, wouldn’t you say? Talk about dedication to your craft! 💖

Today, I took the liberty of creating a new look inspired by the 1830s! Think a slightly longer tutu, in a lovely shade of buttercream with just a hint of shimmering pearl for a touch of royal grandeur. A pair of sparkling diamante slippers and some elaborate, delicate floral hair decorations complete the picture, darling. Wouldn’t you just love to be twirling in that? 🌸

Emma's Favourite Ballet Performance this Week:

My absolute favourite show this week was a breathtaking rendition of "Giselle" at The Royal Opera House, London. I just adored the story, the beautiful choreography, and those flowing, dreamy tutus! I nearly cried when Giselle had her famous pas de deux with her prince - so lovely! That kind of performance is exactly why I adore my life. 😍

And just wait until I tell you about my shopping trip! The gorgeous boutiques on Bond Street were absolutely brimming with exquisite gowns and hats. The window displays were positively inspiring - one was showcasing an incredible new gown designed by Worth, so opulent and romantic! I think I need to make a sketch of it right away... So much creative inspiration all around me!

I'm always delighted when I see new trends developing, too. The newest design in men's hats was oh, so stylish! It was a little straw hat with a curved brim and a little feather detail, so chic! Even though it was *considered the height of fashion, * you couldn't have persuaded me to put one of those things on my head! It was just far too...plain! I mean, look at those tutus! Can you even compare the two?! 😅

Anyway, I better dash! There's a magnificent buffet car on the train I'm travelling on now, with pastries so light and fluffy! Imagine being swept away in a world of decadent cuisine and delicious tea! The whole journey home just feels so stylish and lovely... That's my life as a time-travelling ballerina, darling - full of the most magical, delightful adventures! 💗
