#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1838-08-07 - Post #345

Hello darlings! It’s your favourite pink-tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, back with another slice of #TutuTuesday! Buckle up, lovelies, because this week, we’re stepping back to a time when tutus weren’t just fashionable – they were revolutionising the world of ballet. Yes, this week, we’re swirling back to August 7th, 1838, and oh, darling, the excitement in Paris was absolutely electric!

It's been another fabulously exciting journey – just imagine, me whizzing through time on the back of a steam engine, dressed to the nines in a fetching hot pink tutu, arriving at Gare du Nord in the heart of Paris! What a day to be alive, wouldn't you say? Paris has always been a haven for fashion, and 1838 was no exception!

Anyway, darling, we’re here for ballet, and this day, a legend was born – Marie Taglioni, the ‘angel of the dance’, was performing a showstopping ballet in Paris. What was so special about this ballet? Well, picture this: flowing white tulle, shorter than any skirt ever worn on stage, cascading down in a cloud of ethereal loveliness. It’s Marie Taglioni in ‘La Sylphide’! And this, my darlings, is where the ballet tutu we all know and love first took its elegant form!

Before this, ballet skirts, well, let's just say they were long and very unflattering! Imagine yards and yards of fabric, smooshed and squashed around dancers’ legs. It was all so very restrictive – it was as if they were trying to keep ballet as boring as possible! Thankfully, a change was on the horizon, and darling Marie Taglioni, a woman before her time, led the charge.

It’s such a magical sight! Seeing the silhouette of Marie Taglioni gliding across the stage in her gloriously light, floaty tulle. I can’t describe the freedom she radiated; every step seemed effortless. A complete revolution in ballet costume! Think of all those tutus since, all those dances. From Giselle, the haunting, graceful princess in her flowing, wispy tulle to Swan Lake, the ethereal white swan, and the powerful Black Swan in her majestic, black tutus, it's truly stunning how the tutu has influenced ballet from this moment forward.

Speaking of tutus, did you know that the word "tutu" wasn’t even used in the ballet world until the late 19th century? But my, oh my, once that little word entered the lexicon, the tutu was off to a flying start!

Just picture a London theatre in the early 20th century: bright lights, a vibrant atmosphere, and a beautiful ballerina soaring across the stage in a majestic tutu. The air buzzes with the whispers of the crowd. The tutus have taken a glamorous turn – from delicate, ethereal gauze, the tutus became intricately adorned, embellished with intricate patterns, feathers, and shimmering jewels! Oh darling, it's truly magnificent to behold!

You see, the tutu wasn't just a fashion statement; it symbolised the ballerina's strength and grace. They showed how ballet evolved as an art, a powerful, magical expression of feminine strength and grace! The tutu empowered ballerinas to move freely and effortlessly, taking centre stage in all its beauty. And it has inspired the fashion world too, leading to amazing ballgowns with fluffy, airy layers of tulle. Don’t we all dream of twirling around in a fabulous gown that resembles a giant, extravagant tutu? The joy of dancing, the elegant, fluid movement, and the effortless grace of the dancer. What more could we want?

Let's move away from the grand, dramatic theatres for a moment and talk about tutu history on the streets, darling!

It’s truly wonderful to watch street performers use their creativity and skill to enchant passersby. And of course, every good street dancer, like every true ballet enthusiast, loves a great tutu! And just imagine, little girls all over the world dream of twirling in pretty pink tutus just like theirs. Their faces light up with pure joy and a little sparkle of inspiration! And honestly, can we blame them? It's infectious, this passion for dance and beautiful attire!

So, darlings, whether you are a ballerina, a theatre aficionado, or just someone who enjoys a twirl every now and then, we all share the same passion for this exquisite creation: the tutu. What an amazing fashion statement, this beautiful symbol of elegance, femininity, and artistry! This small piece of fabric carries with it a whirlwind of history, passion, and elegance. A timeless silhouette, a legacy of dance and artistry – isn't it extraordinary?

What’s more, I believe that every single one of us, has a ballerina inside, waiting to twirl and shine. And don’t forget, darlings, it’s not about what you look like in a tutu, it’s how it makes you feel. Let your inner ballerina shine bright – even if that means you’re twirling in your favourite pink tutu in your living room! After all, who said dancing had to be serious, darling? Embrace the silliness and have some fun, it’s a true reflection of happiness and freedom. It’s what it's all about!

As for my time travel adventures, darling, it's all made possible by performing at various ballet events – I’m lucky enough to dance in a variety of venues across time and around the world. Think glamorous galas, charming village halls, or even underground dance parties – nothing can stop my passion for ballet and beautiful pink tutus!
