#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - Post 371: A Parisian Adventure! 🩰💕

Hello, my lovelies! Welcome back to my weekly ballet tutu odyssey, taking us on a trip through time, exploring the glorious evolution of the most fabulous garment ever invented – the tutu! As you all know, I'm Emma, your resident tutu enthusiast, and I’m thrilled to be back on Tuesday with another captivating chronicle of the tutu's incredible journey.

Today, let’s travel back to the 5th of February, 1839, a crisp and lovely day in the heart of Paris. The City of Lights is humming with an energy that can only be described as vibrant and electric. Imagine cobblestones underfoot, horse-drawn carriages clinking and clopping past, and the air filled with the chatter of fashionable Parisians.

My travelling companion? My favourite pink tutu, naturally. I paired it with a powder blue silk blouse, a matching bolero, and my trusty walking boots – always prepared for any adventure, my dears!

Now, let's talk about the main attraction. Our Parisian soirée takes us to the esteemed Opéra Garnier, the magnificent and iconic opera house that stands as a monument to architectural grandeur.

Remember those delightful early days of ballet when the ladies wore graceful, flowing skirts that swirled with every movement?

Well, picture this – Maria Taglioni, a vision in tulle and elegance, takes the stage in "La Sylphide." With every pirouette and delicate pas de bourrée, Taglioni sets hearts racing. Her white tutu – oh, it's absolutely ethereal! Made from layers and layers of tulle, it evokes the airiness of a fairy, accentuating each fluttery step. Think romantic, graceful, and captivating – a true ballet dream!

This isn't just any tutu. It's a game-changer! It sets a precedent, ushering in the era of the Romantic tutu that continues to charm audiences worldwide today.

Let's get a little closer to that iconic tutu, shall we? Here's a quick peek behind the tulle veil:

  • Short and airy: The new romantic tutus were significantly shorter than their predecessors, allowing dancers to reveal their legs and showcase their fluid movement.
  • The Tutu Takeoff: It's around this time that the romantic tutu takes flight, replacing the older, fuller style of skirts favoured in the 17th century.
  • A new era: The design of the romantic tutu emphasizes the ballerina's ethereal nature. Think lightweight and floaty, showcasing effortless elegance and allowing for a wider range of movement.

We are, of course, indebted to the talent and grace of Maria Taglioni and the design ingenuity of the time for gifting us with such an unforgettable sartorial legacy! It’s truly captivating to witness this remarkable change in ballet attire!

So, why are we travelling back to 1839?

Because this particular date marks a defining moment in the history of the tutu. It’s a time when innovation meets artistry to usher in an era that forever shapes ballet costuming.

We're celebrating a dance and design history revolution – the Romantic ballet's embrace of the iconic tutu. This moment signifies more than just a change in attire. It is a movement toward expressive elegance, embracing movement and grace as core elements of a dancer's art.

I’ve even brought along some Parisian charm! I purchased a stunning, antique, delicate lace trimmed pink ballet-slippers which will be perfect with my favourite pink tulle tutus. They even have pink satin ribbons on the shoes! I'll post them on my website. Be sure to look for my post titled Pink Parisian Finds.

So, my darling dance enthusiasts, that's a wrap on our enchanting voyage to 1839, where we witnessed a momentous step for the tutu. Remember to check back next Tuesday, for another captivating instalment in my #TutuTuesday adventures.

And as always, remember to keep twirling, and don't forget to let your tutu spirit shine!

With love and pirouettes,

Emma.
