Tutu Tuesday #420: A Peek at the Past - 1840, When Tutus Were Just Getting Their Legs!
Hello darlings! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, where tutus are the centre of the universe! Today we're going on a historical adventure, taking a little trip back in time to 14th January 1840, a time when the tutus we know and love were just starting to emerge.
You might think it strange, my lovelies, to talk about tutus in 1840, but let me tell you, this date holds some important history for us tutu-loving ladies. This is when the tutus, the wispy and graceful frocks of ballet, were taking their first tentative steps on the grand stage.
Of course, at the time, they weren't called "tutus", They were simply the "tutu à la française" or "tutu à la Camargo". Imagine, if you will, a dress that hugged the legs, a swirling dance of fabric, designed to show off the amazing leaps and twirls of these early ballerinas. They were a stark contrast to the bulky, restrictive dresses that had come before them, like a bright and joyous breath of fresh air!
But why did they become so iconic? And how did they even come to be? Let's put on our pink tutus, ladies, and delve into the magic!
You see, back in those days, women weren't known for their independence or athleticism. But imagine a woman stepping onto the stage, unrestricted by heavy skirts, their every movement light and flowing! These dancers, especially the talented Mademoiselle Camargo, were pioneers in showing off their athleticism and grace, changing the very perception of womanhood in those times. She dared to dance without the constraints of a long skirt, moving with freedom and showing off the grace of her form, something truly remarkable for those days!
I'd love to whisk you away on my time machine to see the actual first appearances of this revolution in costume, but, sadly, we are limited by my budget. I've only got the funds for one trip per week and those go towards new tutus, of course!
Even without being in that era, I've found the most exquisite antique photo in my collection - one that showcases a beautiful ballerina, her movements so airy and light, showing just how groundbreaking these tutus were, the whispers of a movement revolution in progress. The skirts of this dancer are just above her knee, clinging tightly to the contours of her body as she glides across the stage. A vision of delicate beauty, yes?
You can imagine the stir this dress caused at the time, a gasp and a gasp of admiration! Suddenly, a new kind of femininity emerged, not defined by what she couldn't do but by what she could do. You can almost feel it in these photographs, can't you? The excitement, the audacity! This simple piece of fabric became a symbol of freedom, elegance, and the sheer beauty of human movement.
You'd think the popularity of the "tutu" would have exploded, wouldn't you, darling? You'd be right! It spread like wildfire across Europe and then to the rest of the world! A little revolution of style, you could say! I think the beautiful ballerinas, with their grace and movement, had us all enthralled by this amazing, beautiful creation. And we're all so very fortunate that it continued to develop!
To think of the lovely tutus we have today, all swirling and glamorous with multiple layers and colours, all originating from this tiny change, a whisper of an idea - the freedom of movement. How magical is that, my dears!
Speaking of magic, I must tell you about this absolutely incredible ballet show I saw in Paris, the other day, oh it was fabulous! I bought a glorious pink tutu at the Galeries Lafayette, of course, so that I would be right on theme and I can't help but tell you, you will adore my photos. Such an inspiring night! The ballerina was so full of emotion and grace and she spun her tutu, swirling, around her as if she was on a cloud! It reminded me of all the wonder and inspiration these early tutus represented and just how they set the stage for all the loveliness we see today.
As a modern day tutu enthusiast, I adore how far we've come in tutu design! With each new tutu, there's always a touch of history whispering in its fabric, a legacy of the bold women who dared to change the game.
So, dear friends, join me next week for another Tutu Tuesday where we'll continue to travel through time, and uncover the exciting story behind these graceful symbols of dance, beauty, and empowerment. I’m already planning to travel to Russia in January! It is so exciting. Remember, wear your pink tutus with pride. I certainly will!
