#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - Blog Post #424 - February 11th, 1840

Hello, darlings! Emma here, back again with another splendid journey through the history of the ballet tutu!

Oh my goodness, wouldn't you just know it - I just got back from a trip to Paris and you wouldn't believe the glorious ballet scene here! My time travel budget is certainly being stretched, but I have to say, I am absolutely smitten with this enchanting city.

Anyway, I must pull myself away from the gorgeous sights of Paris and return to my task - the #TutuTuesday blog. Now, let me tell you a little tale of February 11th, 1840. On this very date, our world was graced by none other than Fanny Elssler, one of the most iconic ballet dancers of the 19th century. Talk about an inspirational figure! She took the world by storm with her breathtaking technique and divine artistry.

Imagine, my dears! In this period, the romantic era of ballet was in full swing. Think dramatic tales of love, grand emotions, and beautiful dance sequences - truly captivating! It's no wonder the crowds went wild for Fanny's performances.

But back to the tutu, the subject at the heart of my little pink heart! While tutus were beginning to be more commonly seen in ballet performances around this time, the designs still hadn't quite settled on the specific form we're used to seeing today. Imagine, darlings! It's fascinating to think about how our beloved tutu has evolved over the years.

So, on this day in 1840, dancers would be twirling in various styles of tutus - sometimes full-length and elaborate, sometimes short and flowing, with the occasional layer of tulle for added whimsy. Isn't that wonderful? Imagine the delight of such variety and creative freedom! It's a reminder that even in fashion, there is no one-size-fits-all, my dear! It's all about the individuality of the ballerina and the artistry of the choreography.

Speaking of variety, just the other day, I visited a darling little vintage store in Paris. You know I love to go vintage shopping, right? And do you know what I found? A gorgeous tutu from this very period - a flowing creation in the most divine shade of powder blue, can you imagine! And do you know what made it even more extraordinary? It had the most exquisite hand-painted details, flowers and ribbons just like a ballerina’s dream. I am going to wear it to my next show!

I have been simply enchanted by my little trip to Paris and, as usual, my imagination is running wild with future #TutuTuesday posts! Imagine how many other thrilling journeys are waiting to be uncovered?

So, stay tuned, darling! There’s so much more tutu-tastic history to explore! And, just remember, even if you don’t have a pink tutu, you can always put on your very best dress and join me in my passion for ballet!

Until next time, keep twirling!

Yours in tutus, Emma

P.S Did you know February 11th is National International Womens’ Day? How perfectly delightful is that! It’s just another reminder to embrace your inner ballerina, embrace your femininity, and, of course, never stop twirling!
