#TutuTuesday: A Peek into Ballet History – 15th September 1840 (Post #455)

Hello, darlings! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu-wearing time traveller, back with another dose of ballet history for your #TutuTuesday fix! This week, we're stepping back in time to the 15th of September, 1840. Now, you might be thinking, "Emma, what's so special about this date?" Well, my dears, on this very day, something truly momentous happened in the world of dance… but it wasn't in the world of tutus quite yet!

Imagine the excitement, the hush of anticipation as the curtains rise at the Paris Opéra, a haven of beauty and elegance, the heart of the Parisian dance scene. There, under the magnificent chandeliers, a young Marie Taglioni took to the stage, not in a billowing tutu, mind you, but in a garment that, although a little less whimsical, was about to spark a revolution in ballet! It was the year she wore what the French called "Le Costume a la Romaine", or a Roman style dress. What made this Roman dress so significant? You see, dear reader, it was all about streamlining!

This new style was all about long, flowing skirts, like those worn by the graceful nymphs and goddesses of Greek and Roman mythology. The design emphasized flowing lines, delicate arms, and the light grace of the female form. The key was to make every movement look elegant and fluid – think of a floating cloud in a gentle breeze, that's what it evoked. Now, this dress wasn’t a tutu yet, but it’s amazing how its loose, ethereal style and simple design set the stage for what the future of dance attire would become – the glorious tutu!

Remember, tutus didn’t spring up in full form overnight! It was a slow evolution, a dance between tradition and innovation. But on this September day in 1840, a beautiful dress on a talented ballerina paved the way for that beautiful cloud of a garment that, today, has become synonymous with grace, artistry, and… well, of course, tutus.

A Pink Tutu Travel Diary

Speaking of journeys, and darling, what would my travels be without those beautiful locomotives – I simply adore train journeys! Especially through those stunning Derbyshire countryside landscapes! So much so, you might be surprised to hear, I used to use the income I get from my tutu performances to fund my own adventures. Why, one time I hopped aboard a luxurious Pullman carriage! Oh, the glamour! Imagine a sleek, plush interior with rich velvet seating, warm amber lighting and elegant compartments! The windows revealed a patchwork of countryside beauty – green valleys, rolling hills, the occasional quaint cottage peeking through the greenery.

It’s fascinating to watch the world glide past from that window, you see a tiny piece of the past, a small slice of history coming to life with each passing field and forest. Sometimes I would spend these train trips sketching ideas for new ballet looks, especially tutu-related designs, the movement and drama inspired by that countryside landscape. Every new creation is a fresh breath of creativity.

London Ballet: A Dream Come True

Speaking of glamour, my recent trip to the capital was a whirl of elegance and creativity. Now, don’t get me wrong, a simple stroll through Covent Garden feels magical – think cobblestone streets, the aromas of fresh pastries wafting through the air, and the buzz of vibrant energy – and don't forget the flowers, my love! Covent Garden has such an exquisite bouquet of floral artistry that it's a delight just to watch them arrange the flower displays!

But then there's that exquisite haven, the Royal Opera House, it simply steals my breath! The atmosphere there is pure magic – hushed reverence mingling with a quiet hum of anticipation, that exciting crackle of excitement just before the lights go down. This month, I had the pleasure of watching "La Sylphide". Every turn, every pirouette, every elegant leap of the dancers in their stunning white tulle tutus was breathtaking. Just imagining those graceful forms floating in mid-air with that perfect, fluffy billowing effect – well, it sends chills down my spine! Oh, to perform on that hallowed stage – now that’s a dream!

Pink is the New Black

Now, if you’re thinking pink, think fashion, darlings. Every season has new inspirations, so when it comes to style, it's all about keeping up with the latest trends. I’m absolutely loving the way pink has burst back onto the scene! From the fashion houses to the boutiques in the city, everyone is embracing pink with enthusiasm! It’s vibrant, bold, and oh so wonderfully versatile! From fuchsia and crimson to bubblegum and baby pink, there's a shade for everyone. Just the other day I saw a beautiful pale pink dress on a Parisian model and you can’t help but smile when you see something so delightfully charming and graceful.

Speaking of grace, darling, my favourite little fashion trick is wearing pink shoes – you know the kind with the little fluffy tulle trim! It’s that final, irresistible touch, that pink pop of sophistication to any outfit. Don’t tell anyone, but my most treasured pair were actually vintage – you know, one of those perfectly worn-in shoes you find stashed away in a shop that makes you think a bit of glamour has rubbed off on you. They just screamed history!

But I’ll let you in on a secret – every Tuesday is tutu day here on Pink Tutu! The site’s my haven – the place to explore those amazing tulle designs, the delicate lace details, the historical stories, the magical history of this little garment. We may think of it as a modern wonder, but it’s amazing what the past has gifted to us! I promise you'll love discovering every amazing tutu I uncover for your enjoyment.

Don’t forget to check back every Tuesday, darlings, and stay stylish! You know where to find me! Until next time… may your tutus be filled with grace!

P.S I do have one tiny question for you. When it comes to a ballet performance, which is better – watching it in the theatre, or seeing a spectacular performance in an outdoor setting under the stars? Do let me know!
