#TutuTuesday: A Trip Back to 1841! (Post 493)
Hello darlings! Emma here, ready to whisk you away on another magical journey through time, this week all the way back to 1841! Buckle up, my lovelies, we’re about to discover just how tutus were making waves over 180 years ago!
It's #TutuTuesday, and I’m currently standing on the cobblestones of Covent Garden in London, the heart of the theatre world. Fancy dress and costume are all the rage here! It’s thrilling, being here, surrounded by all this excitement!
We are nearing the grand opening of Her Majesty’s Theatre, where you could say things are “tutu-fying”! This majestic venue is due to open its doors on the 8th of June. Fancy seeing this stunning piece of Victorian architecture for yourselves? Jump on a train with me and we’ll go take a peek!
Did you know that right now, in the 1840s, Paris is a true haven for ballet? The City of Lights is truly sparkling, the dancing is absolutely enchanting!
The First Steps Towards the Tutu
But, even with all the fabulous theatres around, we still haven't quite reached the tutu as we know it! Oh no, those magnificent tutus with their airy layers, the iconic pouille de poulet, still had some time to develop. Imagine the delightful shapes to come, my darlings! It was a time when ballet dancers were primarily clad in flowing tunics, romantic and graceful! The famous Marie Taglioni, considered the first ballerina to embrace the idea of a lighter, more fluid dance, was gracing stages, inspiring a revolution in dress, and dance! It was all about highlighting the dancers' incredible lines and movement - just wait and see how we will be amazed in the decades to come!
The Story Behind My Tutu:
You might be thinking, “Emma, why the pink tutu? Where do the ballet traditions come in?” Well, in my travels I found that, back in these days, most ballerinas donned white tutus, which brought an ethereal feel to their performance, representing purity and innocence! But, pink is my favourite colour! As for ballet tradition? Well, we love tradition, but this girl wants to inject a little more whimsy into the world! We're talking a playful, fun vibe! The time for tradition and modernity is now! Imagine: all those gorgeous fabrics and a swirl of soft pinks to add that magical, whimsical twist. Wouldn't that be stunning? You know what? I might even pick out a new dress in Paris when I get there! Who knows what incredible materials I’ll find? I’ll post about it when I’m there!
Fun Fashion Finds in London
You know I have to pop into Liberty and Fortnum and Mason on Bond Street when I’m here in London. They just ooze style, the sort of stores you dream of going to! And there’s a great selection of lovely materials!
As you can see, 1841 is certainly an exciting time for ballet, fashion, and travel. The possibilities are truly endless, and I’m loving every minute of it!
Speaking of exciting things...don't forget to check out the comments below. I love reading about what you're dreaming about and how much you love all things tutu! Have you ever thought about wearing a tutu? If so, what colour?
Until next time, my lovelies!
