#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1843-02-07 (Post #580)
Ahoy there, my fellow Tutu-thusiasts!
Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things pink and twirly! It's me, Emma, your friendly neighbourhood ballerina blogger, ready to whisk you back in time to discover the history of the ballet tutu!
As a time-travelling ballet fanatic (and shameless tutu enthusiast!), nothing gives me more joy than unearthing the secrets behind the most iconic costume in dance. Every week, we dive into a different era, exploring how the tutu has evolved and changed, reflecting the artistry and innovation of the time.
This week, my darlings, we're hopping aboard a plush railway carriage and whizzing off to the year 1843! Can you believe it? Over 170 years ago, the ballet world was still a bubbling pot of excitement and transformation! It's a bit of a contrast from today’s super-sleek studios and Instagram-perfect classes, but no less fascinating.
You might be wondering - how on earth do I afford my time-travelling antics? Well, my dears, the answer is rather simple (and oh-so-very pink!): my ballet performances are how I finance my journeys. And trust me, there’s nothing more exhilarating than twirling through time in a pink tutu!
Fashion Forward: What to Wear in 1843
Ladies, 1843 was all about romance and frills.
- Imagine delicate silk gowns with puff sleeves, adorned with beautiful embroidery.
- The bustle was in full swing, with skirts creating elegant curves and flowing shapes.
- And of course, we couldn’t forget the bonnets! Fancy feathers, elaborate ribbons, and the occasional velvet flourish made these bonnets truly delightful!
Just like our modern-day ballet costumes with their dazzling detail, 1843 was a time of intricate artistry, where even the smallest embellishment added to a grand whole!
Tutu Tales: The Story So Far
Now, let's delve into our beloved tutu! In 1843, the Romantic Era was in full swing, and so was the love affair with ballerina costumes.
You know, this is where it gets truly fascinating! In the early 1800s, the tutu was all about extravagance. Think layers of silk, billowing tulle, and feathers, making it impossible to even walk let alone pirouette. However, the introduction of tights in the 1820s, replaced the clunky knee-length drawers, revolutionising movement.
Enter Marie Taglioni! This ballet icon paved the way for a revolution in ballet attire with her graceful style, she introduced shortened tutus, lighter materials like tulle, and delicate details, all to make movement smoother and easier.
Remember our modern professional tutu - it was Maria who started it all! It's lightness, airy silhouette, and emphasis on technique, changed everything.
Where were our ballet dancers on February 7th?
Today marks a fascinating date in history: the founding of the **National Theatre in London! Can you imagine the vibrant energy in that building, and the stories waiting to unfold within its walls? From classic plays to thrilling new pieces, the theatre has been a hub for artistic expression, just like the graceful beauty of the tutu.
And you know what’s truly incredible? I found this absolutely delightful Victorian drawing in my time travels: a beautiful woman wearing a lavish pink silk gown, gracefully waltzing through a garden. She's wearing a little white tutu beneath her gown! Oh, how adorable ! It just goes to show that even back then, fashion and dance went hand-in-hand.
Time Travel Tales
Oh, my dears, if only you could have seen the breathtaking beauty of the London streets back in 1843! A bustling scene full of clackity-clack horse-drawn carriages, clinking* tea cups at elegant tea parties, and sparkling gowns fluttering down the street.
Remember those delightful carriages with little lace curtains I mentioned earlier? Imagine* sitting on those plush cushions and watching the world go by! A true testament to a gentler pace, but still incredibly exciting, don’t you agree?
