Tutu Tuesday #681: A Whirl Through Time - 14th January 1845

Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your resident Tutu aficionado, and welcome back to another whirlwind adventure in #TutuTuesday!

This week, I'm stepping back in time, my darling readers, all the way to the 14th of January, 1845. Imagine! Gaslights, horse-drawn carriages, and...a whole lot of excitement surrounding a certain famous ballet dancer. Can you guess who it is? That's right, darling! We're talking about the inimitable Marie Taglioni!

Oh, Marie! Such grace, such elegance, and of course, the iconic white tutu. My darling, imagine wearing such a delicate, billowing garment, just a whisper of tulle swirling around your legs, a vision of pure ethereal loveliness.

Speaking of Marie, you know, my travels through time have been a bit like a waltz! Just yesterday, I was watching La Sylphide with its famous, dreamy, fluttering tulle - the grande jeté - the utter poetry in motion that was Marie.

But today, my dear, we're here for fashion. We’re talking historical fashion and of course, tutus are the stars of the show!

Now, to the 14th of January, 1845... What a day for tutus! While I couldn't find an actual tutu-related event (though wouldn’t it be a hoot?), think of the fashion this day represented! We were smack-dab in the heart of the Romantic era in ballet, the golden age of la danseuse. A period obsessed with feminine ethereal grace. Imagine waltzing along the Champs-Élysées, my lovelies, with your delicate ankles just barely glimpsed through the wisps of tulle, so delightfully fashionable and demure.

Now, what is going on around us today in 1845? Imagine it, darlings! We're a whole world away from those glamorous Parisian balls. It’s a Wednesday. Let’s travel just a little further from the theatres and salons... and a little closer to home. Back in my little corner of the world, in the lush green county of Derbyshire, in little old England, it would be just an ordinary Wednesday! It might be a bit of a brisk, frosty day in January, though it wouldn’t stop me from donning a pretty floral-print dress for a spot of shopping at the local millinery! And I certainly wouldn't be caught dead in a Tutu outside the theatre (though I did wear one on the train to get here from my London flat!), that's just too much fashion even for a die-hard Tutu-lover. It's simply a statement for a very special occasion. It wouldn’t even have been appropriate! Tutudoms had their very definite, de rigueur, set time and place in 1845. We must never be out of place, you see!

And it's funny how Tutus have their place still to this day, my dear readers! In this grand history, I’ve seen it all: from the graceful flounces of Romantic ballet to the sheer elegance of today’s dancers, we’ve come a long way!

Oh, darling! It’s such fun, even in 1845. How much I adore the art of fashion, my dears, especially when it comes with the tutu as the most exquisite star of the show. The ultimate feminine symbol of beauty and movement - just imagine, it wasn't all silk and roses...though of course, that's always a bit of a delight, n'est ce pas?

My lovely readers! The history of tutus has a fascinating journey. It was a journey which saw my darling tutu take many a twist and turn from that elegant, romantic period to this dazzling and dramatic age where my precious Tutu is an ever-popular wardrobe essential. So, my lovelies, stay tuned. I can’t wait for you to discover just how the tutu will change through the years as we dive deep into #TutuTuesday on pink-tutu.com

Oh, darlings! Until next time, let's spread the joy of tutus - and maybe some beautiful fashion, too - from one ballet-loving fashionista to another. Remember: a pink tutu is a great accessory anytime and it will help us dance our way into a world full of sunshine, joy and a bit of historical glamour! Au revoir, my darlings!

Lots of love and hugs,
