#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History Blog Post Number 721: A Whirl Back to 1845

Oh, my dears, welcome back to Pink Tutu! It's Tuesday again, and you know what that meansā€¦ a new blast from the past for your #TutuTuesday dose of ballet history. My lovely followers, buckle up because today we are jetting back in time, all the way to the 21st of October, 1845!

This week, my little ballerinas, weā€™re taking a grand tour of the 19th century, exploring a world where the ballet tutu was just beginning its journey from modest beginnings to a truly iconic stage costume.

Think back, lovelies. Weā€™ve travelled together through the Romantic ballet era and met the enchanting tutus of Marie Taglioni and Carlotta Grisi. They were certainly pioneers of this ethereal garment. Imagine, dear readers, tiny, diaphanous creations, practically clinging to their lithe figures. These dancers, they moved like ethereal fairies, with a newfound lightness, almost floating on air!

Itā€™s no wonder the ballet tutu caught the attention of fashion enthusiasts! But we havenā€™t reached the billowing, feathered grand tutu just yet, my little darlings. Our little peek into the world of 1845 reveals a ballet tutu still quite different from what you see today.

In the mid-1800s, the ballet tutu was becoming more defined, a distinct, shorter garment with multiple layers of tulle, offering a delicate, yet undeniably captivating look. Weā€™re not yet in the realm of multiple frills and frou-frou feathers. Think simple yet elegant, my dears!

To fuel my journey back to 1845, I just had to catch a performance of ā€œGiselleā€. You know, the tragedy, my darlings? whispers Oh, it never fails to move me! Imagine this incredible story in its early days!

Letā€™s indulge our fancies for a moment. I can just see the Parisian theatres aglow. Fashionable gentlemen in their top hats and frock coats are in their boxes. Ladies, dressed in extravagant gowns and bonnets, gasp as they gaze at the ethereal dancer twirling across the stage.

After the show, you can find me happily browsing in the opulent fashion houses, maybe grabbing some lace, or tulle for a little dress-making projectā€¦ one can never have too much tulle, my dear!

Just as we have travelled back in time today, my fellow enthusiasts, let's remember how these iconic designs evolved and influenced not only the world of dance, but the world of fashion. This is a reminder to embrace every stage in your fashion journey!

And remember, my lovely followers, embrace your inner ballerina, be bold and daring, and make the world a brighter place. Why? Well, it goes without sayingā€¦because when you feel beautiful and free, you shine! And for every Tuesday, the only outfit thatā€™s truly suitable for travelling through the history of the tutu, my lovelies, is a lovely pink one!

Keep those tutu dreams flowing, Emma

xx
