#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History – A Peek into the Past! (Post 749)

Bonjour mes chéries! It’s your favourite pink-tutu-loving blogger, Emma, here, back with another edition of my Ballet Tutu History series! Today we’re waltzing back to May 5th, 1846, a day filled with so much excitement that I just had to travel back and experience it for myself. You see, darlings, this was the very day when the iconic tutus, which are the symbol of the ballet we know and adore today, were actually born!

Now, before we dive into the frothy details, allow me to set the scene, my lovelies. Picture this: cobblestone streets in Paris, the scent of freshly baked bread wafting through the air, and the most divine little shops filled with ribbons, lace, and… oh my… exquisite fabrics in every colour imaginable! I can already feel my creative juices swirling just thinking about it!

You see, the grand Salle le Peletier, home to the Opéra de Paris, was bursting with a sense of anticipation. The night was special. This wasn't just any ballet; this was "Giselle".

And that, my dears, was when history took a magical pirouette.

You know how we love those billowing, dramatic, and frankly glorious tutus that sweep across the stage? The ones that twirl with every leap and soar with each arabesque? Well, believe it or not, they weren’t always quite so dramatic. Back in the early days of ballet, dancers donned modest, practical skirts with scant flourishes – imagine that, gasp! Imagine the limitations! The creativity! The boredom!

However, oh darling, it was a different story for "Giselle." The talented and wonderfully dramatic ballerina, Carlotta Grisi, decided she wanted to truly capture the ethereal nature of her role as Giselle, and she sought out the help of a little-known designer by the name of Marie Taglioni.

Together, they decided to ditch the old, boring style and, using layers of tulle, they whipped up a magical, flowing masterpiece! This new creation became the “Romantic tutu” and oh darling what a difference it made!

It allowed dancers to soar across the stage with incredible lightness and grace – all those jumps, spins, and leaps we love seeing? Well, the new tutu enabled it! Imagine a wave of white, swirling on the stage! Isn’t it a simply beautiful thought? It was an utter revolution, and let’s face it, one we still feel today, you can’t tell me it hasn’t shaped every ballet tutu since! It wasn’t just about looking pretty, my loves, it was about pushing boundaries, about being free!

Speaking of pushing boundaries, let me tell you about my adventure today! I was just thrilled to arrive in the middle of 1840s Paris! A whole new fashion world just waiting for me!

I wandered through the most elegant shops and, darling, let me tell you, the detail is just unbelievable! From exquisitely embroidered gowns to the finest lace-trimmed bonnets, I was lost for words (and ready to empty my wallet)! The silk was unbelievably luxurious and the lace... the lace, darling, was just to die for! I even discovered a delightful bijouterie shop brimming with intricate pins, bracelets, and other beautiful treasures, enough to fill even my vast collection.

And the fashion of the men? Oh darling, oh, I could spend hours talking about that! I adored their sharp coats, top hats and breeches. Such elegance! All of this inspiration is already flooding into my design notebook, let me tell you!

So you see, my darlings, ballet isn’t just a passion for me, it’s a life force! It’s about expression, about embracement of the feminine and a tribute to beauty, which isn't limited to ballet, is it? It’s in every beautifully crafted garment, in every delicate detail of the feminine silhouette and… well… it even extends to my personal style! Pink tutu included!

After my exciting journey through Parisian shops, I headed to the Opéra to enjoy the show! As I walked towards the theatre, the bustle and energy of the city were electric. Carriage wheels clattered, elegant gentlemen strolled, and beautiful ladies glided by, their dresses shimmering under the streetlights. It was a visual feast, just as the stage performance would be!

The air thrummed with the anticipation of the evening, with each passing moment making my excitement grow. Finally, the curtain rose and the most amazing choreography unfolded. Each move of the dancers seemed to defy gravity as they flitted across the stage in graceful movements. Their tulle skirts danced with them, creating a beautiful blur of motion that captured the imagination. I sat mesmerized, drinking in the beauty of each intricate turn, the power of each grand jeté, and the raw emotion of each poignant moment. It was simply captivating.

I took out my own little pocket-sized notebook and, let’s face it, furiously scribbled my notes. That’s the thing about ballet, you can never stop learning and appreciating every detail!

Darling, how incredible would it have been to see a performance with the very same "Giselle" tutus they first used?! Ah, the power of time travel! I wouldn't dare divulge how it’s done, though, or who knows how many others would be coming knocking on the doors of the Ballet world!

Of course, after the performance, the real treat for me was… the theatre cafe. That is what it was all about! Delicious macaroons and steaming hot chocolate in an ambience that couldn’t be beat! And did you know? Macarons were quite the fashion in Paris! There was even a rumour going round about a rather large pastry chef known for her creative, very impressive macarons! But of course, that’s just gossip, right? Or is it…? giggle

This, darling, is exactly what ballet inspires – the power to travel through time and place, a taste of fashion history and the endless thrill of dancing. Oh, and naturally, a big dose of delicious cake, wouldn't you agree? That’s all, my loves, until next Tuesday when I have another date with destiny – a fascinating glimpse into the 19th century. Don’t forget to join me at www.pink-tutu.com. Until then, wear pink tutus! It’s truly a choice that will take you back in time and elevate you into a whole new realm of beauty! Hugs and twirls
