#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: June 16th 1846 - A Grand Night at the Opera!

Hello dearies! It's Emma here, back with another #TutuTuesday from the past, this time from a glorious June evening in 1846! As usual, my pink tutu is shimmering, and my heart is dancing with excitement.

This week, my time machine whisked me off to Paris, the heart of all things fashionable and… dare I say it? A little bit tutu-tastic! Today marks my 755th post for pink-tutu.com, and let me tell you, this trip is a doozy.

You know I'm a big fan of a good ballet, right? But even though this date's about a century before tutus became the must-have item on the ballet scene, we can still find those airy and ethereal shapes in a totally unexpected place: the opera!

Can you imagine a world where your tutu wasn't meant for twirling under the spotlight, but instead adorned a glamorous opera singer on a grand stage? Well, buckle up, darlings, because this week, we're diving into a world of exquisite fabric, flowing lines, and dramatic melodies - the world of grand opera.

As I wander through the charming streets of Paris, I catch a glimpse of the glorious Palais Garnier, the majestic opera house still under construction, a monument to the love of the arts! Even before the official opening in 1875, this architectural masterpiece was making waves in the Parisian social scene. Can you imagine how amazing this beautiful building would be to visit in person?! I can only dream… for now.

Fashion on the Fringe

Imagine entering a grand hall, the scent of expensive perfume wafting around you. Every eye is on the ladies entering in gowns that make you gasp! The air is thick with anticipation, and the music is thrilling – what a way to spend an evening! But that’s just the tip of the iceberg, dearies.

Tonight's show is an absolute must-see - a "grand opera", featuring Don Juan by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, an iconic piece that resonates throughout time, even to this day. Just try and resist swaying along to that infamous "Là ci darem la mano". You'll need iron will, I tell you.

The soprano, clad in a sweeping white gown (a very early prototype of the grand tulle skirt!), embodies pure romanticism. Her dress is practically a theatrical performance in its own right - billowing, and fluttering in graceful lines with delicate trimmings and ruffles – can you say, proto-tutu? It's almost as if someone's saying, "We've got that airy lightness, just with a little more dramatic flair, if you know what I mean!" Just thinking about it has me reaching for a scrap of fabric to see if I can whip up something similar… Maybe I should bring a few spools of pink thread back with me?!

A Dance Between Genres

Speaking of grand operas, there's an unmistakable ballet influence even in the opera scene, especially within the gowns! Those graceful folds and layers - are we not witnessing the beginnings of the very ballet silhouette we know and love? In fact, opera dancers - yes, they existed! - performed ballet scenes between the singing numbers. Just think, our love for dance, twirling, and beautiful outfits – a legacy of these magnificent performances that graced stages nearly two centuries ago!

Think of all the "prima donnas", who made hearts flutter as they strutted the stage with poise and elegance in their flamboyant, flamboyant frocks. Now that's the kind of fashion I could get behind! I envision tutus dancing down opera stage hallways… maybe a pink tutu is just what these grand productions need! S *mile…

Of course, not everyone gets the luxury of wearing such grand attire. While the social elite revels in extravagant outfits, ordinary folk tend towards practicality – simple dresses with little to no fuss! This sharp divide in styles - between the wealthy and those who strive to live modestly – reflects a time of growing disparity. But it's within this contrast that the appeal of the extraordinary, of the tutu, shines all the brighter!

And You Think This Tutu Needs a Fashion Fix?

One thing's for sure, though. If there's a stage anywhere near, you can bet I'll be there, in my pink tutu, soaking it all in! Perhaps my time traveling ways will have the people in 1846 seeing the world in a more tutu-fied light. Now that would be a story worth telling!

In the meantime, have you caught a fabulous opera recently? Share your tales with me, darlings!

Happy #TutuTuesday, and see you next week, dearies! Don't forget to visit the website - pink-tutu.com. We'll keep dancing through time together, until every single one of us is rocking a pink tutu!
