#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 28th September, 1847 - Post 822

Bonjour, darlings! Emma here, your very own time-travelling tutu-wearing historian from Derbyshire. And let me tell you, today is a VERY special day in tutu history, a day that makes my tulle-clad heart flutter with joy! Because today, my lovelies, is the day we celebrate... the birth of the first proper ballerina tutu! Well, not quite first, but let me explain...

As a devoted tutu-phile, I've always found myself drawn to the history of the iconic tulle skirt. My passion for the story of the tutu, its evolution from humble beginnings to the dazzling masterpieces of today, is boundless!

And trust me, there's been a lot of evolution, my darlings. It’s been a fascinating journey, full of twists, turns, and oh-so-much tulle. You see, for a while, there was nothing but skirts. Lots of lovely layers, sure, but not the streamlined, figure-hugging beauty of a true tutu.

Until, that is, the day we celebrate today: 28th September 1847 - the debut of the crinoline.

Now, you might be thinking "Crinoline? But that's a huge, round cage!" And yes, my dears, you're absolutely right! But this groundbreaking cage structure wasn't designed for waltzing around the ballroom; no, it was a REVOLUTION in women's fashion, and let me tell you, it transformed the tutu forever!

You see, prior to this, dancers had to deal with layers and layers of fabric and heavy petticoats to achieve that billowing effect, something quite frankly a bit comical when it came to jumping and twirling. The crinoline, though cumbersome, provided a defined silhouette for the dancers and the movement, my darlings! Just imagine - they were practically gliding across the stage, their movements taking on a new fluidity! It was revolutionary! It was divine!

As you know, darling, I have a deep affection for all things tulle and train, but even I have to admit the crinoline was quite the contraption. Picture this - a massive, horsehair-stuffed cage, extending out from the hips, adding about 3 feet of fabric around the dancer's form. Oh, the romance of it! And the glamour!

Imagine the fashion houses going bonkers! They were delighted with this new technology! And the ballerinas? Absolutely thrilled to be liberated from the constraints of old-fashioned undergarments. It freed them up for pirouettes and fouettés, for dynamic movements they had never before dared to dream of. And of course, my darling friends, the visual impact was astonishing! Think floaty elegance, think billowing grace - think ballerinas bathed in a halo of sheer fabric!

It's hard to believe, isn't it? Back then, no one imagined the evolution of the tutu into the spectacular creations of today! But that's what's so fascinating about ballet history: the endless possibilities! And oh, how the tutu has truly come to reflect each era! From the graceful romanticism of the crinolines to the innovative elegance of today’s designs, each evolution of the tutu reflects the artistry and fashion sense of the times.

Now, I know what you're thinking - what exactly happened on September 28th, 1847? It was such a huge moment in history that we deserve more than a simple date, don't we? Well, my dears, it's difficult to pinpoint one particular event, since this new trend swept the entire fashion world!

Fashion shows weren't commonplace yet, so you couldn't imagine a dedicated fashion show in those days just for tutus. But this trend did spread quickly, and in The Illustrated London News, on September 28, 1847, the crinoline was discussed as an important, up-to-the-minute fashionable design and not merely an underwear contraption! Can you imagine, darling, this fabulous fashion design getting discussed in the news!

Just imagine being at the theater on a cold September evening, all cozy in your winter wraps. You walk in and are immediately mesmerized by a graceful vision, twirling with extraordinary grace. You watch the delicate, billowing folds of the tutu, like a white, feather-light cloud on stage. Oh, what a wonderful time to have been a fan!

So, that's the story, darlings! And you know me, my passion for tutus is neverending. The tutu never fades, never goes out of fashion, no matter how much time passes. Just like the joy and inspiration they inspire.
