#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 1848.02.01: A Little Whirl Back In Time!
Hello my darling dears! It's Emma, your resident pink tutu-loving, time-travelling ballerina extraordinaire, and welcome to #TutuTuesday, my weekly foray into the fascinating world of the tutu's history!
Today's adventure takes us back to the 1st of February, 1848, and honestly, darling, this date has quite the whirl in the history books. Now, I must say, while our sweet tutus are still rather young, the ballet world is getting increasingly passionate about the dance.
Right now, we are in Paris, France, the epicentre of the world's dance scene, so let's put on our dancing shoes and step back in time!
Oh, before we get started, be sure to pop over to www.pink-tutu.com for all things pink and fabulous, and to browse our lovely tutus - there are plenty of new designs for you all. It's the ultimate online destination for any aspiring ballerina!
Back to the History Books...
Now, while Paris might be buzzing with excitement for all things ballet, 1848 is also a year that marks the dawn of political upheaval throughout Europe. Ah, those pesky revolutionaries - ever making a fuss! It is said, in fact, that the revolutionary mood of Paris may have actually influenced the art and performance styles of the ballet world during this time. Think: dramatic, edgy choreography and bold, powerful movements! Oh, it sounds exciting, just as exciting as my time-traveling exploits, I daresay.
And speaking of drama, can you imagine how shocked everyone must have been to see a young ballerinas dance, swishing and twirling across the stage in their tutus! Remember, the tutu, in its full glory, only came about around the 1830s, and these graceful dresses weren't widely adopted by ballet companies until the 1840s!
What About Our Lovely Ballet?
Now, dear readers, remember this date was just after the premiere of Giselle by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot. Honestly, my darling, everyone in Paris was swooning! And rightfully so! What with its romantic plot, beautifully composed music and heart-wrenching portrayal of a doomed love story, well, my dear, it's no wonder everyone is dancing to the tune of Giselle. It's a ballet fit for any era, wouldn't you say?
Keeping That History Alive
As a time traveler, I often wonder, darling, what if tutus never existed? Could we have captured that magical feeling of lightness and grace in ballet? I simply can't imagine.
The story of the tutu is not just about fashion, it’s about how a beautiful design and revolutionary movement, much like a ballerina's leap, brought a vibrant life to the dance world. I hope you've all enjoyed learning a little about the history of tutus today, dearies. Remember, the best part about ballet, for me, is sharing my love of dance and all things pretty and twirly. Keep those tutus whirling! And if you're ever in Paris, don't forget to visit the Palais Garnier – the Parisian Opera House where many legendary ballet performances have taken place over the years. Just try not to lose your way amongst the revolutionaries!
As always, I’m off to see what other sartorial and balletic delights the world has in store. But before I go, I simply cannot resist reminding you to make your mark on the world and spread a little pink joy by wearing a tutu! Now wouldn't that be the most beautiful sight to see?
Yours truly, Emma
P.S. Make sure you stay tuned next Tuesday for more #TutuTuesday history fun and frolics! We're going to explore what makes a tutu, well, tutu, and unravel the stories behind some of its key components. You won’t want to miss this one!
