#TutuTuesday: A Peek into Ballet's Past, 1848! (Post #852)

Hello darlings! It's Emma here, back again for another #TutuTuesday! Can you believe we're already in April? The spring air is buzzing with new beginnings, and just like the blossoms on the cherry trees, ballet is blooming too!

Today, I'm taking you on a time-travelling adventure to the heart of Paris, the very cradle of ballet, on April 25th, 1848! Picture cobbled streets, grand opera houses, and a symphony of silk and lace swirling on the stage.

It’s the day the curtain rose for Giselle, a ballet that sent shivers down Parisian spines and became a cornerstone of the ballet repertoire. It's an enchanting tale of a peasant girl who falls in love with a man, not knowing he is a prince disguised as a peasant. I simply adored it - Giselle is so utterly romantic and poignant!

And just imagine, the beautiful ballerinas of the time weren’t wearing the whimsical tutus we see today! They were graced with the elegant Romantic Tutu.

Let me tell you all about it. Think billowing, gauzy layers, with skirts dipping to the ankle. It wasn't a structured, "ballerina" tutu as we know it today; rather, it flowed and danced, creating a truly ethereal and romantic air on the stage.

You see, the Romantic Tutu represented a shift in the ballet world. Gone were the cumbersome costumes of the past; the Romantic Tutu symbolized freedom, passion, and a longing for something ethereal, something divine. And I must confess, it makes my heart skip a beat.

And where did I witness this breathtaking performance, you ask? At the Paris Opera House, a majestic building that's still captivating today. It felt like the world stopped, the city's lights dimming as the music swelled and the ballerinas danced with such grace, evoking stories that captivated my soul.

But here's a secret I learnt about Giselle: Did you know that on the evening of April 25th, 1848, a fire almost extinguished Giselle before its debut?! Can you imagine, such a catastrophic incident happening just as the show was about to start?! Luckily, the fire was put out, and the magic of Giselle took center stage. What a testament to the resilience of the dancers, and the allure of ballet.

You know, when I travelled back in time, the ladies there had this remarkable dedication to fashion. Not to mention a passion for intricate fabrics and delicate textures. I found myself mesmerised by the gorgeous dresses of the era, and the attention to detail in the Parisian boutiques was breathtaking. And what’s more, these fashionable Parisians embraced colour like no other. They would weave pink and other bright shades into their outfits. A beautiful homage to femininity and delicate flair!

Now, what about the train journey back to Derbyshire, England, where my heart belongs? Let me tell you, it was a magical trip through rolling countryside and quaint villages. I spent the whole ride sketching ideas for my next #TutuTuesday post! And, of course, I dreamt of a tutu adorned with roses, pink petals fluttering around my feet as I twirled. The possibilities!

Before I bid you farewell for the week, remember to pop over to the Pink-Tutu website for your weekly dose of ballet goodness. We'll explore tutus from different eras, and I’ll even be sharing my ballet performance schedule!

Now, go forth and wear your pink tutu with pride! Embrace the beauty, the elegance, and the sheer joy that comes with a twirl! Until next Tuesday, my lovelies, and keep the sparkle going!

XOXO Emma
