#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History: 1849-03-06 (Post #897)
Bonjour, mes amies! It's Emma here, your ever-so-pink, tutu-clad, time-traveling blogger, bringing you another delightful dose of #TutuTuesday!
This week, we're stepping back in time to March 6th, 1849, a most charming date in the world of dance. Can you imagine a world without tutus? I shudder to think of it! Now, imagine that same world, but without pink… well, that's just unbearable!
Today, we're right here in Paris, my absolute favourite city for its exquisite fashion and oh-so-enchanting ballet performances. Oh, how I do love the Opéra Garnier, with its stunning grandeur! I simply can't resist a pièce featuring that beautiful grand jeté or a captivating pas de deux. The artistry is so breathtaking, it sends shivers down my spine!
But we're not here to admire Parisian ballet (though that's definitely on the agenda, darlings!). Today, we're taking a little trip back in time. 1849… such an important year for our beloved tutus!
1849 was a year when the tutu, still in its fledgling years, was undergoing a metamorphosis, much like the transformation of a graceful butterfly! Think of it, you can practically hear the whispers of tulle, the gentle rustle of lace! While we associate tutus with the light, floaty designs we see today, the earlier models were heavier and much more… shall we say, grounded? Think hoop skirts, but with more elegance. Imagine the excitement in the air when, on this very day in 1849, Marie Taglioni, the iconic ballerina, graces the stage with her grace and lightness. It is believed that her beautiful movement brought about a shift in the style of ballet dress. Now that's fashion influence!
The 'tutu', which we know today, has evolved over many decades. But in the grand history of fashion and dance, this particular March 6th is rather significant. Imagine the buzz, the energy, the gasps of admiration in the air! This date, more than a simple entry in a calendar, marks a small but important milestone in the history of our beloved dance wear.
To celebrate this magnifique milestone, let's imagine ourselves right here in Paris in 1849. Let's have a delightful "Afternoon Tea with Marie" where we sip our tea, admire her stunning movements, and whisper to our friends about this "new-fashioned" dancewear, so light, so captivating. And, naturally, we'd wear the most glorious pink tutus, of course.
But what's on today's agenda? In the Derbyshire village where I’m from, there’s a local market where you might catch my mother, dear thing, browsing for some fabrics for a new petticoat. She loves them with little frills and lace – truly elegant. The other shops are brimming with life, a hive of activity! Everyone’s on their way to church. On the cobbled streets, we can spot all sorts of exciting things, like new-fangled inventions like the railway. Why, just this year, I took a train all the way to London to catch the ballet at the Royal Opera House. There's simply no better way to travel than by train, it’s truly an enchanting experience!
I'm already itching to take a little jaunt on the next time machine, so I must away! Remember, ladies, every day is a good day to wear a pink tutu. Embrace your inner ballerina!
